I don't think Grand Am accepts an SCCA license, but maybe they do.
I've never checked.
Probably an SCCA Pro License.
And SCCA license WILL get you 13 hours at VIR though

There was some buzz among the VIR staff last weekend about a 12 or 24 hr Grand-am cup event @ VIR in 2006.
The Rolex Sports car series is moving to VIR April 21 - 23 for 2006 and Grand-Am is staying in early October, perhaps this split is to accomodate a loooong race for Cup?

The Cup race at VIR will be the season finale...the time format will either be a 12 or 24 hour which will be decided after Grand Am surveys the Cup teams.

What a joke.......rumor is they used to give out GA licenses in cracker jack boxes. I know of people who got Grand Am liceneses who had never raced in their lives (though they did look chipper standing around in their fancy Sparco's at Ferrari Club Events).
I went to participate in a Grand Am practice session at Lime Rock back in 03 and they asked for my Grand Am license. I had a SCCA Regional, National, and Pro license and a Skippy license (also given away in cracker jack boxes). They weren't going to let me run until I pointed out the said "chipper looking sparco" guy who had never even raced before.
A Grand Am License is akin to showing the local DMV your license from "Ciaro".

Jon

When I got my Grand Am License Ihad to go through FIA, this was in 2002..
Once FIA gave me a license (based on resume and SCCA licenses that they asked for) then Grand Am issued me one.

“Secondly, we’re going to run this event on the short course (the North Course) and we’re going to use the other course(the South Course) for ride and drives, drifting exhibitions, new car introductions and all of the things that we can think of that we can bring sponsors aboard for and manufacturers aboard for. It will be a veritable three-ring circus with the race going on the entire time.”

Hmmm, I wonder if they will put up some more permanent dividers between the tracks under the circumstances. I would hate to see somebody on a ride and drive pull a **** and end up in the race!

A couple of buddies of mine are full timers (paid, pro drivers, not spiffy sparco dudes) in GACup and they said that most of the GA Cup teams plan to vote for a 24 hour race.
As for a GA license (or GA Cup or Rolex or whatever) I think the most important qualification is that your $500 (or more now???) check clears.

How are things in the Great White, there Matt?
We've been noodling over GAC options all season, particularly after Pablo got clobbered. This doesn't make it any easier to ignore those ideas.

That reminds me of a quotation from my favorite author Hunter S. Thompson:
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro" Does that apply to pro drivers as well? 24 hour races can be the weird end of the racing spectrum.

So far things are good, but then again, it's been a warm autumn.
Got a chance to drive Mosport a couple of times this fall already. Good stuff.
<back on topic>
As for Les vingt quatre heures de VIR, it does sound fun.
Maybe you need to build a GA Cup legal VW. Or one of those Chevy Cobalts.

Having had some experience with SCCA and IMSA "pro" showroom stock series in a previous lifetime, I think I understand a few things about this particular game....
If you go looking at the GAC rulebook, the first thing that you'll notice is that the various eligible models have all kinds of specific, wacky modification allowances - bigger brakes, different engine internals (including cams), lightweight body parts, different suspension components, and other stuff. That Cobalt gets a different blower pulley and doesn't have a boost limit like the turbo cars. Etc. Etc.
Some get more, some get a lot less and you gotta know how to play the game. It helps if someone from the manufacturer is crossing GA's hand with geld, in the form of TV sponsorship, event promotion, etc., or are supporting "factory" efforts. All that said...

The 2006 Golf comes in two versions - the turbo'd 2.0 four (quoted @ 200/207 hp/tq) or the 2.5L five (150hp).
The 1.8L Audi A4 is spec'd at 2655 pounds and is older technology than the turbo GTI, meaning that the blown Golf be a fatso.
The 2.5L option might be better - particularly for long races. The Acura TSX was recently listed (2.4L four) at a sensible 2600 pounds, with all kinds of parts allowances but it's frankly a hotter ride (6-speed and all) than the base Golf. This suggests that it might come in more like the Nissan Spec V at 2300# (perhaps not attainable), but also with goodies under the hood.
So, whose daddy owns a VW dealership?

What kind of manifold pressure does the Cobalt run in real life? I'm intrigued that the turbo cars have absolute pressure maximums spec'd in the GAC rules, but it doesn't.
