Default 1986 Civic Hatchback Si (running) Got it for free!

It's a pretty complicated story how I got this thing so I'll spare you the details. In short a friend of a friend who owned ths relic passed away. The car was sitting at my friends house being repaired when the the owner's accident happened. If you're ever coming home drunk from a bar keep your legs/arm/head inside the vehicle... not a good way to go out. The car, then, sat for about 2 years and, when my friend moved, the family just said "Get rid of it." So I took it.

My friend's only request was that I refurbished it because that's what his friend would've wanted.

Here she is:

It's got some body problems but it runs like a beast. I'll do my best with it!

make sure you check the trailing arm for rust. where the crossbeam attaches to the frame is notorious for rusing out, and if this fails while you are driving, you will be in a world of hurt.

min failed in 97' going 80mph up the taconic. i shot across 3 lanes of traffic just barely unable to control the car. i welded it up, and it was fine after that. just make sure you check that junction very well. aside from that, i ran 84-87's for years with no problems. i still miss the little cars....

awesome info, thanks man.

I have no experience on these 3rd gens i've only worked on 88-up cars... but I guess with the exception of more vacuum lines and less electrical work it's similar.

I've gone to redpepperracing.com but their server is sooo slow for some reason I haven't really got to digging around.

We were going to start work on it today but the rain just keeps on coming. I'll post engine pics along with the tune up soon. I'll make this the project log for the car!

More updates soon!

Just FYI. There is no such thing as an 85 Civic Si. There is an 85 CRX Si but Civic Si's didnt start till 86.

You sure it's not a 1500S? Is it carb'd?

Looks nice though, i want a 3G bad.

FYI:

I know a good **** load of stuff about these cars . nah I know a little bit.

No Si rims? NO Si badge? No rear wiper arm?

Is it fuel injected or carb'd?

Side note:
I got a d16a1 swap for sale right now that is pretty much direct drop in. I have everythign for it and it is slightly rebuild letting it go for cheap. I have put about 700 bucks in the motor and am looking for half or less.

Good to know... it's an 86 then. Hehe.

Rear wiper arm was torn off, you can see where the Si badge was before it was also torn off... and it didn't have wheels when I got it so I found 2 different sets of steelies to get it running on. It's a full fuel injected Si.

The rain just won't freggin' stop up here so I haven't had a chance to play around with it. SO frustrating.

I have a D16Y8 I want to put in there but I was worried about the drivers side mount. It looks like it's in a different place. Anyone know the deal with dropping in 88 and up D-Series motors? Is it really just a physical drop-in? I know it's a ton of wiring but I'm no stranger to that. Just wondering about physically fitting on the mounts, and the also bolting on the the tranny that's 15 years older.

Thanks for all your input!

nope it requires custom work to get it to work. The d16a1 (that I happen to have for sale) is a straight drop in besides like one or two mounts (which I shoudl have but otherwsise they are from the d16a1 itself). no wiring changes required, unless you want to use the d16a1 ecu.

I'd trade you d16y8 for d16a1 swap )

i'd take you up on that offer because I got the Y8 from a friend's EX that he totaled so I got it very cheap and wouldn't mind a trade like that if the A6 was in good condition.... but I don't know how I could get the motors to each other.

i'm in a touring band (hence the drums and stuff in the pics hehe) and we may be in the Minnesota area for our winter tour in december. PM me about it if you're serious.

just to let u know that untitledsn41 is talking about the d16a1 dohc 16v 1.6l and not the d16a6 sohc 16v 1.6l....cause the d16a6 is almost the same as the y8....

Neat car, they always reminded me of a retarded darth vader from the rear.

As for the motor, its just like a detuned ZC. I had an old teg with the a1 stock w/slushbox, and it was fun to drive. Something like 118hp vs 128hp on the y8, but a bit more lowend.

Been so busy after the rain stopped I haven't really got on it too much.

I've found and put on the Si badge on the back, i got a battery for it, i've changed the Oil and Tranny fluid and put synchomesh in with the tranny oil to try and smooth out 2nd gear that's a little ganky.

I removed the busted A/C system and HOOOOOLY CRAP is all that stuff heavy. I don't know how much is all weighs because I didn't have a scale but I piled it all up together and it was heavy to lift. Car is 1000x more jumpy now with all that junk out!

I have this K&N cone filter to put on but it doesn't fit where it is on the intake pipe with the battery in the way. I have an intake pipe from my brother's b16 XSi swap that I'm going to use to try and extend the piping a bit farther past the battery in order to get that filter on.

other than that i've cleaned out the inside and such.

I found that the speedo doesn't work... bummer. I'm not sure if it's the cluster but I have an 88 si cluster that I can test with to see if it's the speedo cable I gotta get.

I'll post updated pics later on today!

UPDATE:

I got the intake on using my brother's unused B16 Integra XSi intake pipe. I cut the pipe with a dremel and used a coupler I found to join them. I know that's not the right size battery... it's all I have.

^^ haha not trying to do another sales pitch but I got a working 87 Civic Si gauge cluster

That battery will be fine. You could probably get away with a Harley Davidson battery too
