Advan A048 feedback?
Anybody tried the Yokohama Advan A048s? I guess I'm expecting a Pilot Sport Cup type tire but I haven't been able to find much on them. Anybody have experience with them?
awesome tire
do a search, some reviews have been posted before by myself and Big Phat R
basically:
extremely stiff sidewall
very predictable at higher temperatures and pressures
good heat resistance, doesn't get greasy or chunk
good feel and response... communicates the road well to the driver
also, extremely good in the wet; used as wet tire by JGTC/SuperGT
tire wear really depends on which compound you get.
two generations more advanced than the A032... totally different class

since we are on the comparison of the A048s and A032R now ....
the 48s by my super accurate, extremely scientific method of measurement has been able to determine they are some 2lbs lighter when lifting them with my scrawny arms.
But honestly, I don't know the exact weight, but it's a noticeable difference which would translate mildly into better steering response/power delivery and all them over-generalizations....

I've looked at the archive stuff but there's not much data or comparison there. I still don't know where a Soft or a Medium A048 stacks up against the typical R compounds and I certainly couldn't find anything that actually listed any track times differences.
I'm curious about using this tire for endurance races (hence posting in RR) so it would be nice to hear if anyone has raced on this tire. Anyone? comparisons?

There's a '04 Subaru WRX STi that competes in Solo 1 up here in Ontario and he ran on A032R's early in the season and then A048R's later in the season. The only point of comparison (same track) available is at Shannonville, a flat track with old pavement that is quite rough and high grip. This track is known to be hard on tires. On the Fabi configuration (a fairly technical configuration with of mix of slow and medium speed corners) the STi (with an experienced driver) ran a 73.983 second lap as his best. On the longer, faster and more flowing Pro track configuration the next day, he ran a 77.616 second lap. Track conditions were ideal all weekend (warm and dry). These times were posted on brand new A032R soft compound.
At the last weekend of the year we returned to Shannonville for the Canadian Solo 1 National championship. Track conditions were very similar (warm and dry), but the STi's A048R's were looking pretty tired since they had at least 4-6 competition days on them prior to this weekend. His time on Fabi was 74.144 and on Pro was 78.267. So in both cases he went slower on the A048R's, but the owner felt the tires were well past their prime. His feeling is that the A048R's do have considerably more grip than the A032R's (he was very fast on the A048R's when they were fresh), but a combination of his driving style (high slip angles) and the AWD configuration of the STi meant that the A048R's didn't really show as well as they might on a FWD Honda/Acura.
Sorry I can't offer a more meaningful comparo.
