Default Painting a car yourself.......

I was wondering if anyone has painted their car themselves. I was thinking about repainting my 01 civic. I have done some calling around and they were talking about $3500 not including the engine bay. i have heard about maaco and earl scheib but they seem rather cheap and crappy. But i want to make sure that im not going to get in over my head. i was doing some researching and alot of people using chemical stripping to take the paint off the car. Can any one give some advice on techniques, paints, the whole prep and paint removal process and about how long it should take? Thanks

at maaco its a good deal, idk how much it is but someone said that it had a 2 year warranty so if it does wear down after 2 years u can get it a new color for "cheap"

but u still have that warranty so id say go with maaco

maaco paint jobs are like smearing **** all over ur car and putting a warranty with it. they put down like 3 coats of paint and no clear for their "ambassador paint" special which is like 399??

maaco is ugly. if you want overspray go to maaco or earl scheib. i mean overspray on EVERYTHING. headlights, windshield, and whatever else you can think of.

if your looking for a cheap paint job that wont last long, go with maaco... do not do it yourself... my family owns a bodyshop, and i paint cars on the occasion... its not somehting you can do your yourself, im not sure where you are located, but in key west, fl, where my shop is, 3500 is about right... in miami, fl, for a decent paint job 1500 is around what it should be

If this would be your first car, dont do it unless you have professional supervision. I can tell you from experience it is a HUGE undertaking! For paint work the devil really is in the details and there are a lot of details.

One of the ugliest things I've ever seen on the road was an ancient Camaro that looked it was DIY painted flat black with house paint.

I'd rather drop the $ and make it look nice

eh depends on the car. if its a beater, sure do the diy paint in the can thing. if its something you want to sell, maaco works. i had an ek a few years ago and got it painted red at maaco and the overspray wasnt to bad, it looked good, and i sold it super fast. anything else, get it done right.
