My ghetto icebox....
So it was a very nice texas day and i needed to do some work on my car.... first i checked the oil, coolant, water, and repaired a small problem under my dashboard... then i wondered, hmmm... i wanna experiment with my intake... i have an aem sri and my old airbox... so i hooked it up to my intake... needless to say it took some tweaking but hey it fit... and the box closed and sealed over the intake resonator... wow, waht a difference in low end throttle response
And the pull from 3k to 6k was dramatically impoved... although you could not hear vtec with the new setup it seemed to have a stronger pull, especially in seconed gear... Has anyone ever done this before?? I can have some pix up if anyone wants to see....[IMG][/IMG]

I thought if anything it would bog down my car and restrict airflow... and am positive i can feel the gains... especially in the low end digs where my sri would bog my new setup will spin the wheels... ill have pix up shortly... as soon as wtdr starts working...

I'd have to say it's just a butt dyno like he said above.
Why not use some silicon or a rubber gasket to seal it instead of napkins? You ghetto ***.

i doubt it actually helped anything, i bet its more of a sound thing, you cant hear your car making all that noise but you can feel in accelerating, so it seems faster cause its not as loud.
that is the same way my car felt when i put my stock air box back on from having a aem cai, to me it just seemed a little quicker because there was not very much noise

wow.. that looks pretty janky... Idont know if yours worked as well as mine cause you dount have the induction in the front of the car..you know where all the cold air is.
Heres my DIY Ice box
First (dont ask how I got this) I modified a tacoma Injen intake arm to go from the tb to the box.(i think you can use a gsr sri if you cut down the filter side)

Then I cut the small stock peice that comes out of the bottom of the box that goes from oval to round.(its actually a little bit lager than 3 inch alum pipe) and slid this jackson intake arm from god knows what into the cut oval to found.

Then after the vertical pipe I needed to go around the radiator and tow hook.. I used high heat flex hose(used to relocate exauhs fumes,, like from a dyno)
its difficult to see... sorry i didnt feel like removing my splash guards

After making a U turn around the radiator and tow hook I used a small slice of 3 inch pipe to finish off the flex hose.. cut out the block off in the stock bumper where the factory fog light would be.

Finally I installed the Comptech UNI filter.

now the question you guys keep askin ... did it make power???
yes but not much
I straped it to the dyno ran three times without the top of the box on and three with the top on. in a time span of 30min.
Made an average of 2.75 hp from 3000-6500 and 1.5 up to 8500
and 3 lbstrq 3000-5000 and 2.5 lbstrq 5000-7500 same for the last 1000rpm
Now real world figures would probly be larger cause wind speed increases.. we have pretty good fans on the dyno but the street would have much much more air flow.
This whole thing was done to keep the lovely california police men happy when they ask you to pop the hood and to save my *** some cash..this was after my civic was jacked..lost over $10,000 so my teg mods were on a very tight budget. I on a regular basis I use the factory arm and a k&n filter. but now that im in new mexico where theres no such thing as smog I run the alum. arm and UNI filter.
You probly dont need the napkins.. when I run the UNI filter its not a perfect seal on the back of the filter but I still manage to suck up leaves from time to time
Here you can barly see where it comes up to the front

This thread is way to ghetto for me. I said the hell with it and went with the comptech icebox, K&N oem replacement filter and ITR oem intake arm.
The butt dyno says nice gains in the midrange, right were I want it for daily driving.

and I bet there is no difference in power from my setup, or very very miniscule difference.
$200 Comptech setup
$80 K&N OEM replacement
$30 universal K&N that fits better than the OEM replacement
$10 in materials to make my DIY icebox.
I'm not hating on the Comptech setup, I'm just hating on the price that gets very little difference over what you can make for just a small amount of money.

Do you guys usually run your setups the top of your box off??? If you noticed I actually found gains in power with the box top on.

w/o top its SRI. still suck hot air from engine bay, top has to be on for max performance.

I'm not hating on any of these setups either. Props for the DIY and for saving a grip load of money. I just personally would rather spend extra money because I'm a namebrand *****. I agree that the Comptech setup is way overpriced, that's why I opted for a OEM ITR intake over the expensive Comptech bling. I'd rather have the stock look over bling anyways.
Your setup is nice and similar to the one done by a gentleman named Bret.
