Stock Distributor Install - Which Direction Does Groove Go? How Do I get Rotor on Cyl #1
Im wanting to install a distibutor onto my freshly built motor. (d16a6) but caunt figure out exactly what to do, never done a dist before so Ive never even seen the inside
The little groove/keyway can either be on or 180* off right? Which way do I put it? And how do I know that the rotor/ignitor (totally no idea how a distt works I gota search) is pointing at the number 1 cylinder, my motor is set to tdc when I set my timing belt
The #1 cyl is the one beside the crank pulley right?
Thanks for an help and explanations, and yes I have a Helms, but it doesnt say either about these without tearing the dist apart
Thanks

If you want to be sure you have the distributor on right, at TDC, the sparking end of the rotor (thin metal strip), will be pointing somewhere around 7 o'clock on the distributor. The grove on the end of the cam and the key on the distributor are offset to prevent the distributor from being installed 180 deg. off.
cyl 1 is closest to the distributor
look on the cap where the no 1 wire goes and line up the metal strip with that
good luck

i can get a pic of my dizzy and wiring if that will help.
i have the same stock d16a6 engine

I've found that the best way (for me) is to:
remove the distributor cap
place the distributor against the cylinder head
rotate the distributor rotor with your finger untill the whole thing pops into place
install the 3 bolts finger tight
install cap
start car and set the timing.
The distributor only goes in 1 way, the tang on the end of the distributor is actually a little off center.

Im at home looking at my dist now, Ive got it bolted to the motor, took off the cap and dont see a metal strip that pivots from cyl#1-#4, does the dist have to be off? something removed? Completely new to timing/dists here

What the hell are you talking about?
This is a 30 second job, AT THE MOST!
Cam don't matter, as long as it was installed properly...
Just do what i said above.....
And in case you doubt.....
DO IT 10X!
It'll line up in the same place all 10X.
