Default Auto accord running like crap in 1st, 2nd gear

A friend of mine has a 99 auto accord with 60k. Every once in a while, when he starts the car and puts it in D4 and give it gas, it would feel like it was in neutral and barely move, then it would drop into gear and run like crap until it hits 3rd gear, then it would smooth out. By crap, I mean if you try to floor it, it'll only go into 3k rpm max and move really slow.

He hasn't modified (cept CAI) the car and the last major thing that happened was that he hydrolocked his car half a year ago and this happened. This same prob happened after we changed the oil a billion times after he hydrolocked, but was fixed my reseting the ECU. This time, reseting the ECU doesn't work.

Any ideas? Timing, clogged cat, tranny on it's way out, electrical short/ground prob?

Have you checked for any transmission leaks?
Check the transmission fluid.
An auto tranny, without fluid... ...will simply feel like it's in neutral sometimes....

Oh yah, he got his tranny fluid done recently at one of those ghetto lube places and they probably put generic crap in it, though this problem persisted before and after the change. The fluid came out in his words, "...it was like, nasty diahhrea brown and a bit watery"

Well... I've seen a lot of people talking about the tranny of these auto accords (99) and saying they are not so strong.
Do some research or... take the car to a few people to look at your transmission!
Do not see one person and do it right away! Make sure you get an estimate from at least 3 different places!

from the description, it sounds like the transmission is beginning to fail. This is kind of common on the Accords. I am not sure if the 99's were part of the warranty extension or not... i think they are. If that is the case, make an appointment at your local dealer to have it checked out.... if it is found to be the trans, which i think is very likely.... you will get a Honda reman trans at no cost to you (assuming you fall under the warranty extension of 7yrs/100,000)

Thanks for the replies... aside from the worst case scenario of the tranny failing, are there any other possibilities that can cause this? Before he decided to drive through a huge flooded walmart parking lot thinking he captained the U.S.S. Accord, the car ran flawlessly.

Hmmm thats not a good thing.... could have ingested some water in the trans fluid - that could do it. If you take it to the dealer make sure you leave that part of the story out.

So assuming water was at suspect, would a few tranny powerflushes work, or would there be permanent damage?
