Default seatbelt question

The way I understand it, the 88-89 hatchbacks have standard pillar-mounted seatbelts but the 90-91 hatchbacks have those crazy door-mounted seatbelts.

Is this right?

The only real fact is that 88's have Pillar mounted and 90-91 have Door mounted. The 89's are a little unique, some have pillar mounted (a little over 75% the last time I checked) and others have door mounted based on the date of manufacture. The model of the hatch doesn't matter either as Si, DX, STD all came with both variations.

I am certain there is a way to get around the annoying door mounted system, but my 88 came with them in the pillar, so I never needed to pursue that.

From my understanding you would need the appropriate 88-89 pillar mounted doors, and check under the interior paneling on the pillar. There should be the mount to hook it up, but I believe you would need to weld a nut within the pillar itself. That was a real PITA with the last guy I spoke to that did the conversion. Other than that, as long as they are secured to the body/doors correctly, there is no legal issue to deal with.

I personally would reccomend staying with what you have if you have no real good reason to convert, it will be ALOT of effort with very little gain. The only time I reccomend changing the restraint system is maybe to a 4 or 5 point for track qualification, but that would require a properly welded in roll cage with attachment points and racing seats with belt guides. That would cost quite a bit more, but would also be much more secure than any door or pillar mounted system out there.

For Civic:

- All '88-89 Civics had pillar-mounted seat belts.

- '90-91 hatchbacks had door-mounted seat belts.

- '90-91 sedans and wagons had motorized seat belts.

For CRX:

- All '88 CRXes had pillar-mounted seat belts.

- '89 CRX HF had pillar-mounted seat belts.

- '89 CRX DX and Si had door-mounted seat belts.

- All '90-91 CRXes had door-mounted seat belts.

This is for the USDM only. All Civics and CRXes sold outside of the US had pillar-mounted seat belts (yes, this means all Canadian models had pillar-mounted belts).

I feel your pain, this was one of the factors I became aware of after I had acquired my hatch.
