sounds to me you have a wiring problem.. possibly the tach signal wire is grouned out to the chassis of the car.. but not sure if that would cause a problem cause the tach signal is a negitive wire.. maybe it is touching something and getting 12volt power surge of some sort.. sorry man..

i had this problem with my del sol. you most likely have a loose wire in your distributor. all i did was took my distributor cap off and one of the wires was loose. just go through and squeeze all the wires together with some pliers and i bet it will fix it.

does your tach work at all? mine would work fine unless i was reaming on my car then it would get to about 5000 rpm and start bouncing all over the place and sometimes it would go all the way around to the little peg and bounce off it. if it works some of the time and when your driving slow then its definitely probably a loose wire. it only takes like 10 or 15 minutes to fix.

IT has been my experience that a bad ground can cause a bunch of problems with tachs jumping around. I would check all of the body grounds that go between the engine and the body. Also make sure the grounds going to the cluster are all ok…

I had the same problem, thought it was a bad wire too. Someone else on this board told me it was a sign that the ignitor is going bad so I replace the whole distributor instead and now it doesn't bounce anymore. You could just replace the ignitor instead, I just got a use working distributor for the same price of just the ignitor itself.

yeah when i got a new igniter mine started messing up but then i took the cap and rotor button off and jiggled everything around a little and tightened the wires and now it works like a champ. i know a couple people that had the same problem i had. i would try that first since it doesnt cost any money.
