Motorcyclist Fatally Struck By Ambulance In San Juan Capistrano
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -- A motorcyclist (Christopher Rivers,31) was fatally struck Saturday by an Orange County Fire Authority ambulance as the paramedics were en route to a medical-aid call, a fire captain said.
The crash on Ortega (74) Highway, two miles north of Antonio Parkway, occurred at 7:17 a.m., said OCFA Capt. Stephen Miller.
The paramedics were responding to a call -- received at 7:06 a.m. -- of a person "down in a vehilce" when the crash with the motorcycle occurred, Miller said.
Rivers was westbound on ortega, when cars slowed for teh orange county fire paramedics in the east bound lanes.
Rivers veered left and crossed into on coming traffic, the CHP said.
The ambulance crew -- who were not injured -- rendered aid to the motorcyclist while other paramedics were sent to handle the original medical- aid call, Miller said.
The motorcyclist, a man believed to be in his 30s, died at the scene, officials said.
Authorities were unable to locate the person who was the subject of the original call, said Miller.
He said the fatal crash was the subject of a multi-agency investigation.

on a lighter note..... i rode 360 miles this Sunday. going from SGV/LA area riding down to SD county met up w/ a friend and headed east along highway 94. we then hit buckman springs/S1 heading north. the view along sunrise highway is spectacular! Rode to julian and ramona to highland valley road, and finally up north on the 15 to Rivertucky. i thank God for a safe trip!
my prayers go out to the unfortunate riders and families

our rates here are outrageous and someone only dies every month or so...seems daily down there...sigh, depressing **** i tell ya...makes me wanna buy a nice cage and hide behind it....a nice rear wheel drive cage, sigh....

During the summer, it's about an accident a day (reported) on Ortega.
too many cagers + not enough riding skill + boosted egos = intimacy between your butt and the asphalt

like mentioned, too many cages to make it a fun ride. my proposition to the state would be (once the tunnel is finished) is to either make it no trucks allowed or motorcycles only.
i know that may sound a little ridiculous but so does 1 motorcycle accident per day. lives are risked every day on this route because of impatience of drivers that are caught behind slower moving vehicles. if people used a little self control in these situations most of these accidents could be prevented, and since people can't control themselves or their personal mode of transportation let's take a vote on how the route should be handled.

I think, until motorcyclists have more financial pull than their cager "brethren," they won't allow Ortega to become motorcycles-only. That's like an open invitation to go nuts on the road.
But, it would be pretty sweet.
I'd make that hour trip to ride there.

yes, a slightly ridiculous plan but fun to dream about.
here's another one- just like on the 15 in north county san diego. in the AM traffic goes in one direction, in the PM it goes the other.
that in sense would double the amount of lanes and make it much safer for everyone.

Hahaha, we should do that for the 10 and 210 freeways, too!
And maybe the 405.
And the 101...
I imagine the exits would be all ***-backwards...
While we're dreaming, can I have won the lottery, too?
