Default Engine Fan, Temp Gauge, plz help !

I'm new to this forum. I have a 92 Accord with 177,000 miles. It rocks ! I love my car. I have a small problem with it. I hope my new friends can help me.

1) After I turn off my my engine, engine fan starts. The temp gauge is normal for short drives(5 mins). If I drive for 15-20 mins, the guage starts going above normal and then it comes down. I can feel the car overheated. I had this car for 5 yrs and the engine fan never ran whenever I shut off my engine. Filled coolant recently. I'm scared to go on long drives. Please suggest.

2) It gives 19 mpg in the city. Is this normal for 92 accord ? I need some information about increasing my gas mileage ?

Thank You Friends !

My civic does the same thing, i checked the fluids and they are fine. Some people are saying i have to replace or remove the engine fan relays, that is, if its not the actual engine causing the problem. The temp guage never used to go up, just the fan came on after i shut the engine off, but nowadays the temp gauge is doing unpredictable things. Im going to change the oil filter and engine oil just in case since i havent done so in a while.

My question is, how do you know if its just a fan problem (including temp sensor & guage problems), or if its really the engine overheating and if so, what do u do?
