Snapped a header bolt...now what?!
I just installed my DC 4-2-1 CC header today. The whole installation went smoothly except for a snapped header bolt (that conencts the header to the block). I don't hear an exhaust leak, but I'm afraid that a leak may develop. How can I resolve this? I know a lot of you have had to deal with the same problem. Thanks.
it's like a screw with a reverse thread... the further you tap it into the broken bolt, the more it starts to unscrew the stud. great investement, just don't buy crappy ones.

ALSO, NEVER tighten the header bolts when the engine/header is warm. When it cools it will contract and rip the studs right out of the block.

i believe its made by craftsman and you can buy it at any sears. Its just a drill bit that can unscrew things that have been stripped or broken. goodluck

Yeah, getting out a broken bolt is never fun.
The E-Z out bit is a drill bit designed to drill a small hole into the borken bolt. Then, you put it inot the broken bolt head, and it extracts it. Use plenty of Wd-40/liquid wrench whatever. Work slow, and insure thatyou have plenty of room for the drill that you are using to insert the pilot hole, and most imporantly to get the ez out into the remaining bolt head straight. You may end up taking out the radiator and the fan to have room for you drill.
Though It doesn't leak now, it will. It will..

These "EZ outs" are also known as extractors. Take your time drilling the hole. You don't want to drill through the side of the bolt and hit the threads. It is a good time to invest in some good drill bits. If not you may need a couple to get through the screw depending on it's hardness.

I unfortunately did that same thing about 2 years ago...it was the end stud on the far left side(passenger side of the car). I took it to a couple shops and they were very blank-faced about it so I just let it be. It hasn't leaked at all that I can tell. Of course I'm running a lukewarm 130 stock hp.
if any of the stud is still exposed you can unscrew it out of the head with pliers!
No, none of the broken bolt is exposed. I even tried screwing in the broken bolt back into it since there seemed to be a little room, but that didn't work. I'm gonna take it to a muffler shop and see what they say. It's not leaking now, so...

Did it snap when removing the nut or when installing the nut after putting the header on?
Oh, you also might want to find a place that rents power tools and see if you can get a 90-deg. right angle drill. I've seen them before, from a couple of different manufacturers. Check at hardware stores to see what they look like.

It snapped when I was removing the bolt. Do you think it's possible to extract the snapped piece without taking the header off?
They sell these bits at kragen. its a counter screw that you use to drill into the bolt. Its pretty easy to do just make sure if the bolt did not break evenly you center punch it first or your going to have a fun time trying to get that tool to work. Basically you just put your drill in reverse and it drills the bit into the bolt. Eventually the bolt will loosen and come out. Worst comes to worst you will have to drill out the bolt and re-thread the hole. Probably wont get that bad tho.

oh ish! that is the exact same thing that happened during the install on my friends car! weird... either do it yourself or just go to a shop and have it done... can't be too expensive.
I don't know what is up with that bolt, It seems to break off in all integras, including mine. Some of the bolt was still sticking out, so I just put a new nut on it and it never leaked.
Did you ever get it out? I just pulled the heat shield off of the exhaust manfold on my gsr swap I just got from IAS and noticed two nuts were missing, one bolt was snapped and there is some sort of sealant all over the gasket. I left Larry Jr a message but I doubt he will do anything about it.

when you remove them, soak in PB blaster first. Then to remove them, put a socket on it and lightly tap with a hammer to break it loose. Apply anti seize when putting them back in.
