So, I TIG welded some mild steel to some stainless
Now ahhh, I was under the impression you couldn't do it. A friend came over and wanted to mock up his exhaust and put on a different canister, so I was like no problem. My MIG has been acting shitty, so I figured I'd just TIG it.
Well, he is taking his exhaust off and I see nothing but boogers and popcorn from when he borrowed my MIG last time. He can't weld too damn good at all though, so I don't give him **** for it...just keep quiet.
Well, we mock it all up (everything is painted black), do some witness lines, then head to the back to TIG it up. So I get most of it done, then we get to this one section where he is using a piece of his old rear section. I see him clean it up with the wire brush and that stuff is shining like a mirror. I am like, awww man that's stainless and all this is crap.
He says, well just do it, I don't care what it looks like. So I figure whatever, and just go at it. It came out really damn nice though. Considering it's not really under load I figured it wasn't a big deal, but what's the situation? I assume the weld is just, for the mostpart, fairly weak? I mean, it's strong as hell as far as an exhaust goes, but welding the two in a load bearing situation is probably not advisable?
I just didn't think it would weld together period...surprised I suppose.

We do it all the time when the header requires a mild steel flange you just need to use the proper filler rod which is 309
