Default Help with my Honda 650L

Hello, I am 15 and recently my step father gave me his 650L believe 99- or 98 model honda, so far its been fine seeing as I have had experiance on smaller bikes and such, but manual transmission is very much new to me, theres no rpm guage, and I am not totally sure what MPH to shift at, iv pretty much been starting in first and then staying in second going like 15ish seeing as im still learning, but I still dont know when I "should" be shifting ? If any of you could help me that would be greatly appreciated.

When you upshift, the bike should move smoothly and not bog down on acceleration. With enough practice, you'll know by sound when to shift.
