Ok so i have a 98 gsr tranny on my swap and is it just me or is this thing geared short as hell? I always seem to end up in th, be it going 50mpg or 80mph.
Also it seems like 5th gear is waaayyy short, ill be going 60mph and be at 3k rpms, by 80 im near 4 and thats not even stepping on it.
I know in my last few hondas 5th gear seemed to extend on forever and now i can easily get into 5th gear vtec which is absurd.
is this normal? Im running a built b17-T with a 98 gsr tranny and LSD

what you are experiencing is 100% normal. my explaination is that the gsr was set up for performance or spirited, agressive driving. of course is must be practical for daily driving, or else they wouldn't sell too many of these things. i think they found a nice compromise between agressive gearing and drivability. notice that when you want to go fast, you have no complaints about the gearing. like everything else, all good things come at a cost.
4k at 80ish mph is normal...if u think that's high u should see my friend's 92 gsr...its around 5k at 80ish
you are almost always in vtak with that car.
I think my tranny is at about 4k at 80ish in 5th (J1 with LS 5th gear).

Lets see how our math is; 3000/60 = 500/10 and 4000/80 = 500/10. Thus, for every 10mph, you'll spin an extra 500rpms. BTW, wtf does "stepping on it" have to do with what rpm you're at, at any certain speed???

yeah so in this type of tranny is it bad to hit 5th gear vtec? I mean do i risk blowin it apart or is it meant to get into vtec in 5th?</TD></TR></TABLE>
going into vtec in what gear has nothing to do with blowin your engine. You will experience slower acceleration b/c of the longer gear. Hitting Vtec in 5th?.....are there such need?

4k doing 80 is normal like everyone else said. When in 5th gear with a gsr tranny, you take your speed divided by 2 and thats what rpm you should be at. Aka 80 miles and hour = 4k rpm. 80/2=40 Not exact but close.

Vtec doesnt kick on a stock gsr until 5000rpm... as long as you are under 50% throttle or so. CMON you all know that. If you push the gas lightly/medium acceleration while you are cruising at 80, 90 or 100 (everything under 5000rpm) you will drop out of vtec and be cool. The second you hit the throttle too far: POP... you are right back in vtec(anything above 4400rpm)
It is not "BAD" to be in vtec alot while cruising... but it does lower you MPG a little and will wear out your valvetrain sooner.

now i understand why i see souped up tegs and civics driving like 55 in the slow lane all the time... must have a jdm final drive or something. if they went any faster they'd probably be hitting vtec hardcore. i can't imagine being above 4k rpm at 80mph, especially with these gas prices!

You should read something about BSFC sometime and then you'll realize why we get better gas mileage then you do.

i drive a teg too. i'm just talkin about peeps who have the crazy short gearing... i have a gs-r with a stock gs-r tranny right now, but am throwing in a type-r tranny soon. i'm anxious to see the difference in gearing!
