Fat Five restoration
I serched for this and couldnt get anything specific so i thought id try asking. My fat fives/GSR hammerheads are scratched and the finish has began to get dull. Is there any way of using sand paper/polish to bring back the original look as well as removing the scratches? I saw a thread on this a while ago but it was for 99 SI wheels.
Any help would be appriciated

Not neccessarily....the lips on my CP-Rs don't have a clear coat and they stay pretty shiny, they haven't gotten dull on me since I 1st went at it with some Mother's Polish. Theres also this stuff I purchased made by Luster Seal which is a sealant made for metals, especially polished metals....It further protects against dulling, oxidation, water spots etc.....**** works really good, I've been impressed with it so far

you can, but it doesn't look as good if you try to polish with leaving the clear coat on em. I now have a different set of fat fives that came on my car stock that are my back up wheels which were really faded with kinda like an oxidized look to the surface of the wheel. They still have the clear on em but I took some Mother's Polish to em just for ***** and giggles and it got rid of the nasty looking residue on the surface of the wheel and it did shine the rim up some, but it wasn't a consistent look, so it worked ok, but not as good as if you strip the clear off 1st like I did in the above link on my 1st set of GSRs....

well i tried this out on one of my fat fives. It came out nice but theres lots of little scratches from when i used the 80 grit to remove the remaining lacquer. GSRchris how much of the stripper did u use on each rim (**** load or moderate) and how long did it take of polising/ sanding to achieve your final result?
Thanks for teh awsome thread

For the paint stripper, when I started using the aircraft paint remover, I only did like 2 coats tops, I sprayed it on pretty heavily and let it sit for like 5-10 minutes then rinsed it all off and used a plastic scraper tool on some stubborn parts that the water didn't take off. I then used a 2nd coat to take off some small areas that the 1st coat missed.
As for the sanding, after 80 grit, I started wetsanding with 320 grit, then I moved up to 1000 grit after that. Its a long process, I just kept sanding till all the scratches were gone and the surface was pretty smooth.

What I did on my wheels is I took off everything with aircraft remover, then I started with 100 grit to remove that 'machined' look, then moved up to 2000 grit, redoing anything that didnt come out. I followed that up with Mother's aluminum polish, then 3M rubbing compound, and it looked like a freaking mirror.
