Default custom air to air intercooler

Just thought I would share a few pictures of an air to air intercooler I am working on for a friends twin turbocharged Mustang. All welding was done with a synchrowave 250DX.

wow. very impressive TIG welding there. you've got the "stack of dimes" look down perfectly with what looks like great penetration and consistency. props

Yes indeed. It looks incredible! Major props to you! Can you give us specs of the material thickness, tungsten size, amperage, filler size, etc.
Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words, .125" sheet cut on a waterjet, 3/32" 4043 filler, 3/32" pure tungsten, watercooled torch, small gass lens with #6 cup. The tank to the core took about 150-175 and the tanks themselves were 120-140.

Yeah, lime green 73 hatchback with either weld draglites or some steelies and dog dish caps.

looks good

How did you weld it solid without it blowing back on you? or are there holes already cut in the tank pieces that i'm not seeing?

I wish I could just pick up a tig and weld like that...so many ideas, so little welding experience...

I welded it in such a way that it had a vent the whole time. It is a core off ebay. Thanks for the kind words.

Have you ever seen Eagle one wheel spray? If you clean off all the pieces with the "D" etching spray and rince off good .It makes it allot easier to weld and then after your done do the same thing. And it makes the allum.all even color. And it won't get those burn marks where the weld is.The welds look nice and even.Do you feed the rod the whole way? So you don't have to stop every 4"?

I guess I don't mind the look of the cleaning the arc provides for the weld. Just something pretty standard looking with AC welding to me. I try to weld without stopping whenever possible, but I did have to stop a couple times when welding the tanks to the core, everything was just to hot for me to touch or I ran out of filler. I may have to try the wheel cleaner on a smaller project to see if I like it.

Best regards,

Looks awesome, but did you drill your holes for the inlet/oulert before you welded the tanks on? Cleaning shavings out of an IC could be a bitch.

You the same guy who's been around Joey's shop, or is it a coincidence you have a green pinto and are from SD as well?

Cleaning the shavings out hasn't ever posed a problem. Yes I worked for Joey for about 6 months. I left there toward the middle of July. I currently work for Dakota Digital.

isn't that from the heat that the weld generates? its just escaping through the metal...or something along those lines

The white "stuff" is the result of the cleaning action that you get from welding in AC.
