Good question!!! I think you have to buy it back, I doubt they'll give you cash for the car and let you keep it. Just buy it back and part it out. Make more money on it that way anyways.
insurance companys usually never let you take parts from the car if they total it, except stuff not noticed, but my friend the motor is pushin-severly. you do have the option to buy it back, and probably cheaper than all hell, since you were the owner you get furst dibs, im gessin around 700-800, but if you dont buy it back once its gone, its gone some ricer will see it and nab. i would suggest buyng it back, and parting out everything except what you wanna keep.
When my 93 honda delsol got totalled I bought it back for $390 and they gave me $4800 for the car. I ended up stripping everything I could off of it and then selling the car to a junk yard just to get it outta my front yard. I'm sure you'll be able to buy it back for relatively cheap. Just do it before they take it away, cause once it's gone it's gone and you can't get anything off of it.
Good luck

will i always have the option of buying the car back or will they just take it....i have a 96 civic coupe dx.....and my whole front is crashed and chassis bent....how much u think ill get or how much wood it be 2 buy it back?
Look at it this way. When the "total" the car, they are buying the car from you based on what it will take to buy another just like it. That means they own the car and everything on/in it. You can then buy it back from them and its yours to do whatever you like. Someone with more legal/insurance expertise correct me if I'm wrong.
the accident was the other persons fault and he also had P.I.P......my main concern is the motor.....the can give me money and keep the car all im asking for is the motor cuz its goin in watever car i buy.....how long does it take 4 the insurance 2 usually pay back?
Just relax. Tell the insurance company that you want to buy your car back and go from there. Just don't let them lo-ball you. Do your hw, check KBB and see what your car's worth and it's usually around 10% of that price to buy it back.
hey when my hatch got totaled and it had a gsr and some jdm stuff inside with some rims I got like $4800 for the car from insurance. At first they wanted to give 2000 but I showed receipts of **** that was in there and made them pay me what I deserve. I was also able to buy my car back for only $100
i have cf hood and ctr headlights but i dont have reciepts cuz i bought it locally from people.....but i do have reciepts for my motor.....i was thinking 2 switch the motor and put a blown stock sohc butttttttt they took piks of it so i dunno if i should risk it....its a 96 dx do u think ill get like 3.5k or 4k?

The risk of insurance fraud isn't worth even a K-series. Here's how the buy-back usually works. The adjuster took some pics and he/she will contact local salvage yards for a bid on the totaled car. As someone mentioned YOU have first dibs, they can't just take the car. They will usually average the bids for your buyout. Most insurance companies will just take that off the top of the check they cut you. Usually not more than $500 or the type of vehicle we are talking about..
Contact them or wait until they contact you and make sure to tell them you will be buying the car back. Just wait until the whole matter is settled before pulling the engine. From there strip the whole car of any usable parts and have a junk yard take the shell away. If you strip it this may cost you a few bucks, otherwise remove all VINs and push the junk shell down the street somewhere, the city will eventually pick it up. Just kidding on that last one.

umm, am I the only one wondering if trying to spare this motor from a car that was just in a front end collision, this bad, is even worth it? does it still run, what can be saved from the motor?

It really is a case by case scenario here. **** even a side impact could mess **** up under the hood. On an old EJ I had years back someone whacked me in the drivers door pretty good. No damage on the front half of the door but it was enough of an impact to shove my drivers axel into the trans. Cracked the housing pretty bad too.
The only for sure way of knowing is if the car is still drivable, take it for a spin. Otherwise it all comes down to luck. Hope the LS/VTEC is still in good shape for ya though..

Probably like $400 for my best guess.. Don't be so paranoid, they can't take what is yours.

</TD></TR></TABLE> by the way it was an eg hatch and I still made them cough up money. It did help having a lawyer in the family to do some "we'll take you to court and ask for double" move.
