gt28rs = Full Boost at 6000 rpm
Hey i have a 2000 civic d16y8 and i have a gt28rs, forge bov, forge fmic, 440cc, 2.5"downpipe to stock cat to 2.25" piping on a magnaflow muffler, and tuned by greddy e-manage. I am putting down 206 whp and 163 wtq on a inaccurate mustang dyno on about 8.5 psi. Anyways i make full boost around 6000 rpm and i know it should be around 4000 rpm. I have made a little tester and checked for boost leaks and found a 2 little pinholes in my charge piping and got them rewelded and it didnt seem to help the spool at all. My tuner said he also checked the internal wastegate and says its working right. He doesnt believe me that my turbo should be making full boost around 4000 rpm and says my motor is too small to do that and i have a "big" turbo. Also at around 6800 rpm i feel the power drop dramatically and takes forever to reach my usually shifting point at 7200 rpm. The tuner also says i cant flow enough air this high in the rpms and that is making this loss of power. But i dont think it should drop that hard. My timing was retarded about 23 degrees and my air/fuels are between 12-11.5. I would show you my air/fuel and dyno sheets but i cant seem to figure out how to post them. Any help on getting my turbo to spool a lot faster and have better top end would be appreciated. Thanks.
First off, find a tuner who knows what the **** they are doing, this guy sounds like a moron. The first thing I would check is how the wastegate actuator rod is set then go from there.

Indeed.
Do you have a boost controller? If so, try taking it off, and just hooking the WG line to the intake manifold.
Also, timing has a very important part in spool up. If timing was pulled in low RPMs that could be a major contributor. I'm not really sure what you mean when you say the "timing has been retarded to 23degrees". Is that at full boost, or base timing...or what?
Also the 2.5" DP going to a 2.25" exhaust might come into play as well. The larger the exhaust, the faster the spool.
Just throwing out some ideas. Any pics?

Definatley dont go back to that "tuner"
As far as your problem; it could be a bad turbo; leak in the exhaust before the turbo; stuck open wastegate etc.
it could also be that the turbo is spooling like it should it just slowly creeps to 6k making you think its not spooling till then. My garrett t3/t04e on my d16z6 spools around 5k and creeps up some because the turbo is shot and i still have some small exhaust leaks.
And loosing power up top could be a number of things; most likely your idiot tuner has afr's up there in the ultra-rich range (< 10:1); if thats the case you'll make no power. between about 6 and 7 on my car my afr's go from 11.5-richer than 10:1 and i lose all power. i'm working on fixing that with my tune

Sorry did you have something to add? Spool is most definately affected by ignition timing.

Agreed! I suppose though even if the ignition maps were totally fux0red, he would still be seeing full boost before 6k with a GT28RS. Sounds like the internal wastegate actuator rod is set too loose to me.

i'm not too familiar with emanage... but how good is it at tuning ignition maps anyway? at WOT, the ecu runs its set program more or less... it might be reverting to the all-motor oem ignition curve. i don't know much about emanage, but that could be a culprit. a lot of advance = poor spool.
Here are the dyno charts.....

no sir i think you are incorrect here

rip that cat off and see what your spool is so u can elimante that as an option.
just unbolt the thing and drive around see how it feels. rule it out 1st thing.

I didn't know they came with an adjustable rod. If so, this is most definetly the case...

Yup...considering that torque just keeps climbing higher, it is definetly creeping.
