How should i break in the clutch?
drive normal or hard
for how long?

 

There is no break-in proceedure.

 

drive it nice and calm for the first 500 miles...this means dont rev up the engine then drop the clutch...that would be a terrible way to destroy a new clutch...just take it easy on the clutch for the first 500 miles its better to be safe then sorry

I feel sorry for you if you ever get a new clutch and don't break it in for the first 500 miles.

Do easy shifting. No dropping the clutch at 6500 RPMs, drive it like your grandma for the first 500 miles, and you're golden.

You my friend have alot to learn, yes there is a breakin period unless you don't give a **** about it. But to the original poster next time do a search cause this topic has been covered before.

i kind of have a question branching from this. Can you just go on the highway and drive 500 miles, like 250 in one direction than turn around. Or should it be in town, so you actually use the clutch?

Don't be a lazy *** , I was told that the most important gears to break in was 1st, 2nd and reverse. So just driving on the highway will not make you work those gears. City driving would be the best. Some correct me if I'm wrong!

 

its actaully 500 miles of mixed driving. The whole idea is to bed-in the clutch through engagement and disengagement.

It would be city driving where you actually have to shift and use the clutch.

 

what i figured, i just was trying to think of a quick easy way that was still effective.

everyone just says 500 miles, not that it should be in town driving

I'm sure around 400 or so wouldn't be bad if it happened.. But anything below that I wouldn't do.

 

I've done 4 clutches in different vehicles and have never broken one in, i've revved each to redline after pulling it out of the driveway and dumped it. There's no problems with any of them.

If something breaks on a clutch, it's not because it wasn't broke in, it's because of a manufacturing defect.

A friend of mine's dad has been building race cars for 30+ years and worked in shops and dealerships all his life. He's yet to break in a clutch and has yet to have a problem either.

You've alot to learn.

 

I just put in a new one, and I'm not being especially easy on it, nor was I on any of the other clutches I've done.

It's a similar concept to brakes, which you don't brake in either other than seating the pads.

 

everytime I have replaced my clutch (twice) I wouldnt say I did a break in procedure&gt; i tried not to beat on it to hard for the first 500km's but I have to admit i did hit 7000rpms once in twice before that. Have had no problem yet with it.

Your friends' Dad is obviously a shitty mechanic, his race cars must lose every race. Sure, you can dump a clutch after install, tell me how long it lasts if you do it that way though. Get your information correct before you come and start throwing random thoughts out.

 

To everyone talking about how important break in is, explain what the break in period does.

It's two peices of metal (the pressure plate and the flywheel) that get clamped by a clutch disk. I'd imagine the first few times you slip the clutch you get the "grooving" effect that you get with new pads/rotors on disk brakes, but after that, what happens?

I just want to know what this supossed break in period is supossed to do that's so important?

 

Haha, i took out my first clutch when my engine blew, it looked brand new after a year. A friend of mine we did the clutch in 2-3 years ago is still working perfect with a turbo set-up on a Daiken Stage 1, another friend of mine we did the clutch in is still gripping hard after a year with an ACT.

You kids and your "break-in" proceedures, there's one thing that needs broken in, that's a freshly built engine and it's broken in after 10 minutes of idling and changing the oil.
