Default Grinding sound...

So my car decided to develop a grinding, almost squealing sound. Its not a squeal like from an AC belt, which I have right now as well. Its more of a metallic grinding sound. But it does sound like both sounds mixed together, weird i know. I was thinking it might be the brakes, but it doesnt do it when i use the brakes. I noticed it does it when the car has been started after sitting a while and after its cooled down completely. It will make the noise for a little while off and on and eventually go away. Could it be a belt? or something else? any opinions?

Coming from the engine bay?

My guess is that one of your brake pads might be offset...maybe the bracket off, or you forgot to put it back in. So when you put on the brakes, it wouldnt make a grinding noise anyways. Or, it could be rust developing on your rotors that's causing the noise.

Be more specific and we might be able to help.

Yea, it comes from the engine bay. Almost sounds like the driver side. It could be the pads. Last time I installed them with new rotors and I remembered everything. Nothing was forgotten. Side note, I do notice I hear clicking or popping sounds when I brake going slow. Anyway, about the rust, not sure on that. The car was never left for that long and it has been dry and hot around here.

No, its not the exhaust pipe.

Throw out bearing? Does the sound change when pressing in and out the clutch?

maybe the wheel bearing on my driver side? This sound has totally gotten out of hand. It makes it for a good 5 min or so now, maybe longer before it goes away. It happens when the car is in motion and when i brake, it still does it but its not as loud. But when the car is in motion, its so freaking loud now. help! this is embarrassing, haha.

hey tighten up your lug nuts before your wheel falls off...

btw, i think it's one of your belts that's overtightened or needs changing

try taking your alternator belt off and see if the pully spins freely. They can seize up sometimes. There shouldn't be any resistance when you spin it.

kinda sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me. Did you try jacking your car up and checking for play in the front tires from side to side.

damn, my auto tranny is going out on me now. you think there is any relation? When the tranny downshifts from 2nd to 1st, it kicks. Also, the changing of the gears is really slow and the engine over revs. Sometimes, it even revs really high. Like i will be driving and all of a sudden it will just rev high and i have to take my foot off the gas and reapply it to fix the prob. Sigh...

Check your fluid level. Sounds like your torque converter isn't getting enough fluid in it. Also check the color of your fluid. It should be red. If it's black or brownish then you've got tranny problems. And yes, that could be where the sound is coming from.

fluid level is ok and the fluid is red still.

Try sitting at a dead stop and shifting between Neutral and drive and listen for any change in sound. Your engine rpm will decrease, just listen for the noise when you shift to drive. let us know if you hear any strange noises when you shift to drive. Also, do you ever hear the sound when sitting in park or neutral? This way we can start to eliminate possibilitys.

i had the car off in neutral and rolled it back and forth and i heard the noise coming from the hub area of the front driver side wheel. but just to update, i had to take the car to the shop for a tranny rebuild. Ill let you guys know if that fixes it.
