That's a lot of money for a new 600, too.
That's a $1000 jump in price over last year's model. That bike better show its taillights to anything short of a new litrebike for that kind of money.

The faster they get, the lighter they get and the easier they break when dropped. I'd be scared to dump a newer bike for fear of it breaking apart into 43987598435349834 pieces.

$18,000 for the LE. Is that a deal or not for all the extras you get? Marcheseni wheels (sp?), Ohlins, and a slipper clutch right? Would it be cheaper to buy an 05' and buy the aftermarket stuff seprately? Also, can you install a slipper clutch on any bike? Am I thread jacking?

Geez.. back in '04, on that Super-Duper Shootout, when they got all these racers, ex-racers, and journalists together with a big tire manufacturer sponsoring their latest hoops, the R6 lapped the quickest average time and the quickest best lap. That was w/RSU forks, and those small little brakes.
They didn't really need to do all this for the '06 as far as performance is concerned. It's just a marketing ploy if you ask me. Which is totally necessary to sell todays hot race reps.
I think a lot has to do with their factory race efforts too. If you can't hire the best riders (AMA, although DiSalvo was pretty kick *** at Laguna), you try to make up for it with the machine. With the new R6, their team should have a better chance out there.

You're right, all the upgrades do have to do with racing. Be it AMA or even amautur club racing. The Kawi's were walking all over them due to the better parts coming on the stock bikes(zx6rr's) and being allowed to run 636 in WERA and CCS races.
IMO Yamaha redesigned the R6 with the goal of winning every 600 class there is. Slipper clutch, assumed lighter weight/more power, 17.5 redline, fly by wire throttle, new chasis and swingwarm etc etc.
For the street the R6S will be more then enough and IMO much like the zx6rr anyone who gets a R6 and doesn't track it is an idiot.

That is if the racers don't buy them first.
AMA and WERA superstock legal for the Yamaha guys.

That's flat black, David! Plus, the Dark models from Bologna are all stripper models, with shocks and forks and motors that are vastly inferior to their more brightly colored siblings.
Our black bikes have shitloads of clearcoat on them, and look better than the regular colors. So they cost more.
