Default DIY CATCH CAN *PICS* Now How Do I *LEGALLY* Run Everything

Got bored yesterday at work, started looking for something to make when I was bored, catch can sounded like a cool idea. Before we start Im gonna mention I have no idea how PCV systems work, I know there meant to vent the crankcase and thats it. So bare with me

I took a barely used air compressor oil filter, rinsed the insides of oil. Drilled 2 holes for 2 3/8" barbed fittings at the top of the filter placed bside eachother, and mounted a drain plug on the bottom with a brass fitting and an M12 bolt. I capped off the openning of the filter at the top with a small aluminum plate that fit over the holes perfectly. Everything was sealed and dealed nice and tight with jb weld and some hi temp gasket ****.

I did not make this thing to look pretty, ill paint it black and thats it, its a Honda not a show car. So now I have this

And I have no idea how I am supposed to run the vacuum lines and everything to this thing. Found a bazillion different answers but none answerred or stated this one little factor I need to work.

- MUST BE CANADIAN EMMISIONS LEGAL (to pass emis and cop checks)
- BE FUNCTIONAL

My motor is out of my car right now and as of right now all i have is the black box mounted to the back of the block with a line running to the little valve type thingy mounted on the intake mani and I guess the other part and last part of the stock PCV is the valve cover to my intake

This is a D16a6 motor, going medium (16psi) boost this coming season.

I need someone to tell me how this ******* **** is supposed to be run. I have no idea, I really dont care about all this maximum performance and all that jazz, I want it functional and I want it legal for when I get my car e-tested. Any other pics can be given if youd like, dont mock the 25 min catch can, shes a beauty.

Thanks

There are two places you can run it to, one is less effective so it is best to run two cans.

The best place to run it

There is a vacuum line from the intake manifold to the PCV valve. The PCV valve is connected to the crankcase. This is where majority of the oil vapors are sucked out. You basicly splice the catch can between that line.

IE Intake manifold vacuum ----> Catch Can -----> PCV Valve

2nd place to run it (or run a second one)

Under WOT there is no vacuum so there is some flow reversal and oil vapors can go out of the top of the valve cover into the intake stream. So you would splice the hose that goes from the valve cover nipple to the intake pipe.

IE: Valve Cover nipple ----------> catch can ----------> intake pipe.

Neither of these should fail emissions, if anything it should improve emissions because you are catching oil vapors and blowby gases instead of reburning them.

Well say I run it between the intake manifold and the PCV valve (stock PCV black box is still attched to block right?). If I do it that way then what do I do about the valve cover -> intake hose, must pass CDN emissions

Also, isnt this supposed to vent crank pressure? WHat if I tapped a breather filter ontop of my catch can so the pressure releases through tthere (right?) and when emis time comes around I can plug the hole with a fitting and have it closed off. passes right?

Im lost as to PCV goes lol

You will still pass emissions if you only tap one location, the only way you would fail emissions is if somewhere the system was open.

So any use of a breather or unsealed system will cause you to fail. (like your second question, using a breather filter).

You also don't want to have a breather, the PCV will vent the crankcase just fine via vacuum.

What do I do with the line that comes off of the valve cover and intake your intake pipe, Im going turbo, no longer have the hole on the intake pipe

IT will do something. Ever take off your intake and see all the oil inside it and your intake manifold? Thats what the catch can prevents.

What vents the crankcase though here?
