Default which pants?

These are my choices all are A*'s

Street Cargo Pants
These pants were just released by Alpinestars and offer a perfect balance between protection, comfort and practicality. Denim fabric with hard, but easily removable armor. How much better could it get??
Abrasion resistant reinforced denim fabric
Removable CE certified knee protectors
Engineered loose fit
Vent panels above knee area
Cargo pockets
Side zipper opening on leg for quick application of optional Reflex knee guards

Twin Leather Pants
Full-grain 1.2 - 1.4 preium leather construction
Padded knees for comfort and a better fit
Mesh inner lining
Five pocket design
Metal zipper and metal logo with amtte finish

ST-5 Drystar Pants
"Breathable Cordura construction with Cordura stretch panels for an improved fit.
100% waterproof, breathable Drystar membrane.
CE approved Smart protectors.
Anatomical design is cut for the riding position.
Removable Valtherm liner.
Reflective piping and Alpinestars logos for improved nighttime visibility.

Basically its denim w/ CE plastic v. leather w/ padding v. cordura w/ CE plastic

A lot of commuting?

Go with the Drystar Pants (not sure where you live, but they'll be useful if you experience light weather). I'm pretty sure nothing is 100% waterproof, but they'll be better than the Cargo Pants.

If you do more spirited riding, I highly suggest the Leather pants. I don't know how useful pockets on leather pants are, but the leather will be more durable in the long run.

Denim is not abrasion resistent at all. It'll last about 2 feet on pavement. Buy either the leather or cordura pants.

Cordura is a type of fabric similar to nylon. It comes in several weights, with 600 denier being the most common on motor clothes, though 1000 denier is available. To the touch it feels like a thicker and rougher nylon. It is very abrasion and tear resistant.
