Check DMV's website (www.dmv.ca.gov) for more details about registering the motorcycle. AFAIK, a 49state bike has to have at least 7500 miles on it in order to be registered in CA. If the bike already has at least 7500 miles, then no sweat. DMV will check your engine and frame numbers to see if it's all gravy. Then, lighten your wallet for the license & reg fees, and you're set!

the bike has to have 7500 on it if you are already a california resident...if you are moving here from another state, then you can bring in any bike. there in lies the trick

I actually just did this for my 49 state '04 GSXR600. My bike was never registered (had the MSO in hand) since it was a race bike. The DMV will check the VIN and the bike will need a california emissions sticker or have the 49 state emission + 7500 miles on odometer. If you dont have either one, they'll send you to the CHP to verify things (if they do, you're pretty much screwed and the bike will be black flagged which means the bike will NEVER be able to be registered in CA). You'll also need the MSO or bill of sale + the form they give you after they check your bike at the DMV

Make sure you have everything done before going to the DMV or else you'll be **** out of luck and have a track only bike

you are correct. But you buy clusters and there are lots of CA bikes

remember...the bike has to have at least 7500mi at the time of purchase

I'm in a similar situation, but I'm unclear on what to do.

I have a 49 state bike I bought new in MA and brought here to CA with me. I am keeping it, but want to register it in CA. What do I do! I already have insurance through Progressive. I had planned to head to the registry with my insurance paperwork and my MA registration.

What else will I need?

if you moved to CA from another state, the rules dont apply for you (meeting CA emissions or having 7500mi). They'll just check your bike, verify the VIN, fill out some forms (maybe pay some registration fees), and give you a "welcome to CA" slap on the ***. Just bring in your MA title and proof that you moved to CA (not too sure on what you need but I'm thinking DL and some bills; call the DMV to be sure)

http://www.dmv.ca.gov

also: do you still have the emissions sticker on your bike? You may need it but if you dont have it, you might have to go to the CHP (which shouldnt be much of a hassle since you're legit)

I'll update this more in a few weeks once I've gone to the DMV, but I'm not sure what "emissions sticker" you're talking about. My bike was never smogged. Non-Cali bikes don't have emissions equipment. I have an inspection sticker for it, but it's safety inspection not emissions, and it's on my MA license plate which I still haven't turned in.

the emissions sticker should be on the right side of the frame or under the seat. Call the DMV to double check that you need it since you moved to CA
