Default Axle

Ok I'm thinking now the axle may also be bad as the car quivers some just cruising a long. If I end up having to replace the axle should I go with an OEM one or is there an aftermarket one out there that is better? How much should I be expecting to spend on the axle?

go autozone or discount auto, i believe they both have lifetime warranty axles. will cost you roughly 70 bucks an axle plus the $50 core. aftermarket axles are overkill unless you run 26" slicks with the torque to back it up.

The only reason I was thinking aftermarket axles was incase I decide to do an engine swap if something ever happens to this one and if I do that I would probably build one putting out some serious power and would like the axles to hold up to it. I figure I minus well put stronger stuff on than stock if I'm replacing it anyway unless it is a lot more than I want to spend or it isn't any better.

How do you mean by "quivers"?

Ususally the only thing wrong with an axle, unless you've snapped it, will be something to do with the CV joints.

The steering wheel just quivers. Shakes slightly just cruzing a long. It really shakes when you get on the brakes but it does it not soo much but does it driving the local guy that everyone likes for this stuff said that usually means it is in the axles but that the rotors are also bad which I figured. He is going to check it but I'm wondering if I wont have to replace it.

autozone axle will be fine for you. they are lifetime warrantied so as long as you arent paying someone to do the work if they are bad, you can get them replaced.

I am paying someone to do the work as it sounds like a major pain in the *** on this car is it not?

its easy as hell, just get a big *** breaker bar and socket for the axle nut, get a 17mm for the castle nuts on the steering rack and lower ball joint, pull hub up, pull hub outward so you can take out the axle, the put in the new one and reassemble. you may need a good 4lb mallet or something of the sort as well. oh yeah and get a pickle fork as well.

Before you go spending all sorts, I'd suggest rotating the front tires to the rear and note if the condition changes.
You could have either an out-of-round or out-of-balance tire(s)
It's a quick (and cheap) test which will at least eliminate that as a cause.

Do I have to deal with this bearing being pressed in the hub **** you do with rotors or is it easier than that? I don't want one that is going to go bad again soon I don't care if it has a lifetime warrenty or not. Is the Autzone one strong and last or do you guys just keep replacing them since it is free?

the hub over rotor wont affect you changing the axle. if you want to resurface or change your rotors, thats when you will suffer and get pissed and start kicking stuff when trying to get them off.

anyway, im using discount autozone axles on both sides. i think i messed my passenger side one up the other day (damn toqrue hehe) so im gonna replace that one again soon. but as far as them being good, i think they are ok. as far as quality, i dont see ones from the dealer being any better.

Any company's make any aftermarket ones that are stronger? I will most likely just go with these but want to check out all my options.

i would strongly advice that u try what P_Adams suggested before u waste ur money unnecessarely replacing the axle...

if steering wheel shakes at slow speeds , 15-30 ..most likely u got a bad tire ,,if it shakes at hwy speeds most likely an out of balance issue ..

These tires arn't that old but I have had them a year or so I will try rotating them. It shakes at 60 or 65 mpg though I don't notice it at slow speeds.

Check the wheel balancing, but if that doesn't fix it.....it's the brakes. My car is doing this now to, but it's minor. The warped front rotor is rubbing the caliper back and forth a little bit as it rotates around, causing that oscilating feeling through the steering wheel. If your half shaft-cv was popping during turning, then.....I would say replace the drive shaft. Otherwise, just have the rotors turned on the front.

the brakes seem to be bad also as it really shakes when you get on them but since it is doing it when not on the brakes it makes me think it is something else also. I have some Brembo rotors and Axis pads I'm going to have put on. I would do it myself but with this hub over rotor thing not sure I want to do the rotors and they will put the pads on for no extra charge.

Everything you've mentioned makes me think "tire." Balance, rotate, replace... Troubleshoot the easy things man. I can tell you where to go for high performance axles, but you'd better have deep pockets. Bidding starts at $900.

Or call Level 10 performance @ 973-827-1000. They specialize in billet axles.

from what you wrote:

i believe its the rotors are wraped or one side of the shocks are bad up front or tires are unwevenly worn. it isnt the axle that make the car quiver . good luck.

Mechanic called and said both axles need to be replaced should I just get him to do it or do you guys think he doesn't know what he's doing and it isn't the axles?
