Well this is just sort of a pipe dream but we have a ton of expired carbon fiber that our school got for our FSAE team and me and my buddy are learning how to make stuff with it.. i was wondering if it would be a good idea to have carbon fiber IC piping and if you know anything about carbon fiber. how would you go about making it i was thinking take my piping and lay it over it but then i wouldnt be able to ge the piping out..if you have any expertise please share. also we havent figured out how to do it with wet layup if you guys could help with that

hehe I gave a contact person who deals with carbon fiber everday. I would take input from the CF experts on this BUT that is just me

 

i would contact fiber images...they have doin fiber for a long time and have made me some custom parts for a couple of cars.....if money is a concern go for it....ask about bulk buys....setup is gonna cost the most...once you have the molds...it can get alot cheaper

 

just a friendly conversation and no im not looking to make a bunch of these just one for me...we are just playin around with the stuff learning how and what we can make.

 

Make some foam plugs that make half of the pipe. Do up a layer for each half, pop the halves out and epoxy them together with another layer or two of carbon wrapped around them.

Never done it, but that is how I have heard you would do it in an economical manner.

Might want to add some aluminum on the ends to keep them from cracking on you when you try to tighten those T-bolt clamps up.

 

I know at some point AIR Research, the guys that make the carbon manifolds, had carbon tubes available in straights and bends. I don't really know any more details on it, but you could try contacting them.

 

that could be cool, they make everything else out of carbon fiber why not piping now!

Look for Aquacore on Google. You make a mold of the shape you want, pour in the Aquacore, remove Aquacore part and then wrap it in the carbon fiber. I think if you vacuum bagged it this way you could get a very smooth surface finish on the inside of the tubing. After the carbon has set you can just rinse the Aquacore out with water.

I can't work with carbon, but this is how a buddy made the charge pipes for his Hayabusa, and they are very nice, and totally seamless.

Oh...I was going to make mine with the Aquacore pillow.

Its hard to find but its good stuff, and I believe it is reusable.

 

Morgan (synapse motorsports on here) and I made some a few years ago for my car ( i wanted it to match AIR manifold )

 

that's looks pretty nice. I wonder how durable it is though...

If you could find bends, I would just mate them with a thin-wall aluminum tubing that matches the I.D. and epoxy it in place. Superbling.

Put enough carbon on there and it'll be gravy. I have a Carbon Fiber hockey stick. The blade is 4mm (0.157 inches) thick. The blade is also HOLLOW. Each wall of the stick is about 2mm thick. A puck weighs 6 ounces. I weigh 215. When you take a slapshot you're putting all you weight into the stick and slamming it into the ice a little way before the puck so that the stick whips into the puck. That's a shitload of force exterted into the stick. If it can stand that, I think it'll be OK for charge pipes.
