Go to the dealer and check them out. Sit on them and see what YOU like. Check out all the specs and compare the differences.

Oh, right. I guess he doesn't talk like an experienced rider so he automatically needs a pathetically slow bike that hasn't been updated since the internet came out.
If you're looking at new bikes, the vote is close. The new 636s are decent bikes, but I own an R6 so I am totally biased. However, the older the bikes get, the better the Yamahas look. Older 636s are cool-looking but I doubt I'd ever buy one over a CBR or R6 or even a Gixxer of similar vintage.
R6 = slim, comfy (upright), screamer engine.
636 = better for bigger riders, more torque due to cheater Kawi motor. Up to you, really.

man these posts are getting pathetically old.....listen to ross, hes got the idea, also listen to whoever said go sit on one, performance wise you are defently not going to be able to tell the differnce if your asking a question like this anyway.
Oh i voted for yamaha, because 1 kawasuki sucks, 2 i am biased, My R6 is my favorite bike ive ever ridden....i could write a book about it, or you could search, i'll let you do the work.

never said he NEEEDED a slow bike - I could give two ***** what he gets - but from his question it doesnt sound like he's even sat on eitehr of the 2 bikes.
out of all the 600s I believe its preference on comfort really - your height and weight should play the biggest factor really - because when I ride an r6 it's just way to small and thin - i feel too big for the bike.
he should do some research as well - cause I believe this question has been asked a numerous amount of times

He doesn't talk like an experinced rider, would you ask HT about this or would you read the mags then test ride them both then say;
well I have riden them both and whilst 'a' is nice 'b' had this. I am wondering if any of you guys could back this up for me. By the way my budget is around $'x' my last bike was an 'x' and I really liked it but its time for a change
Thats what I would expect an experienced rider to say?

Yeah,
There is a big jump in the style of bike from 02- to 03+ on the Kawasaki's. The 00-02 ZX6R is a more comfy "softer" bike than the 03+ but not quite as honed for performance. They still make an 00-02 ZX6R called the ZZR600 b/c of popularity of the design.
The R6 has kinda made a more steady improvement/style change that is pretty much reflected linearly from 00-05. My roomates 02 R6 feels more like my 03 ZX6R than an 02 ZX6R.
New? It's pretty much up to whichever one you like best and are most comfortable on. All the new bikes are pretty sweet.

i voted for R6 but it does depend on the years..03+ is when they first FI the R6s not sure about the Kawi but i'm guessing 03 too. The Kawi is a tad bit faster if your looking for speed but handling wise it's a close call but i would still pick the "newer" Kawis. I voted for the R6 due to comfort and my own taste and preferences. If this is going to be your first bike then i say neither but it's up to you. good luck
yeah i say if its your first bike, get a used one. a used r6 is nice the 6r does have a little bit more power like everyone is saying... Id go with the 6r personally... do yourself a favor if you havent already... take the msf class, get some decent gear before you get your bike. Best of luck on your decesion.
Kudos to you for not jumping out and saying you want a liter bike

i don't want to jump to conclusions that he's new to riding or anything but honestly saying there isn't that much difference between a liter and a 600. A 600 can get you seriously hurt just as much a liter bike can, it's only about a 1 sec. difference and the newer 600s are not toys anymore, they can pull their own against liter bikes. If starting on a somewhat "new" sportbike is what he wants, i would say a 99+ CBR F4/F4i (most user friendly IMO) or even a good used Yamaha YZF600R. Once again ride safe and good luck

i didnt say anything about a difference from a 600 to a 1000. i said the 6r has a little bit more power then the r6. you are right about getting just as hurt on a 600 then a liter bike...
