Pics from the Dragon and the Cherohala.
I was going to post this in the motorcycle subsection but realized that a lot of car drivers love this road too so...
A few of these pics are from the Cherohala. My new love. I MUCH prefer it over the Gap. The scenery is just mucho better and the lack of traffic on it is great. However, some of the better action shots are from the Dragon.
The resort was a LEETLE bizzy on Sunday.

My bike and my Dad at the Cherohala. LOTS of Triumphs on the roads as the Rat Raid was going on.

My Dad on his ST1300. He's getting pretty quick on that thing.

Very nice little restaraunt down on the far end of the Cherohala.

This custom was pretty quick for such an ungainly beast.

ST1100 gettin down.

WHHHHeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This truck was surprising. He never crossed the centerline unless he meant to step it out (where he could see what was coming). I was quite impressed. They stopped to talk to us for a bit while waiting for the Harleys in front of them to get out of the way.

This is one of the local Goldwing heroes of the area. Yes, he is fast. Yes, the sportbikes in front of him are holding him back. Yes, embarrasingly enough, he passed me on the Gap while I was riding two up. Not sure he would have taken me when I was riding solo which I only got to do three times.

Last one for now. Just a cool couple we met at our hotel and hung out with on Saturday and Sunday. Good people.

I'm done for now. Will likely post some more on Wednesday or Thursday when I'm off work again.

I'm surprised you've not already been called a squid by the guys here...for wearing jeans!!! heaven forbid that a person ever ride a motorcycle without a full leather suit!!!
Hope you had a great trip. I'm not far from the Gap, so I go often. I prefer the Gap over Cherohala. I prefer the tight curves to the long, sweeping ones. Therefore, I pretty much just stay at the Gap.

This upcomming weekend is the bit Busa Bash. There should be a lot of them up there. I havn't decided if I'll go or not. I know some groups that go to the Gap can be pretty wreckless, as a whole. Others are pretty safe and respectable. I've not gotten any word on the Busa guys yet. Hopefully they'll be a good group.

It's nice to live close because you have all the time in the world to improve at a comfortable pace. Know guys that have ridden half the time I have, but will blaze by me...but one thing I can say is that I've never laid my bike down or been hurt riding. It may happen one day, but I figure that if I slowly improve my skills, I'm greatly reducing that chance.
Killboy doesn't miss many people that ride the Gap. Odds are, if you rode through even once on a weekend, they'll have more than one pic of you. They sometimes have 3 photographers set up. There's a couple other people that have started competing with Killboy, but from what I've seen they don't come near the quality of pics killboy gets. There's a big difference in having $1500 in photographic equipment vs a little $200 cybershot.

Actually, there are no pics of me above. Only of my bike. I do however wear jeans. I have been down in them as well. It sucks but I wear all the gear but the leather pants.

I don't think they've updated their pics for the weekend but I know for a fact that he did as I was sitting with Dave from killboy for better than an hour and a half taking pictures and absorbing tips and tricks he had for me about shooting this style of photography. It helped that we have the same camera.
Other than that though, any pics he took of me on the gap suck. They weren't taking pics on the only day I rode the gap solo. Riding solo I was running hard and smooth. Two up I was very rough and slow. I used to be fast as hell with my wife on the back but for the last two years our schedules have made it hard for me to put her on the bike. I've gotten used to rideing without her.
He even got a few pics of me getting ready to pull out of the pull off area after shooting with him. Then Sunday he got me putting back through the gap on my way home.

There was probably over 50 Busas up there over the weekend. I knew the Bash was this weekend coming but it felt like it was this past weekend. LoL

As I said before, I didn't meet Daryl (technically Killboy) but I did meet and hang out with David. He's a cool cat. Didn't have to talk to me and certainly didn't have to help me out but he did. Using the same camera was nice as it helped him show me how to do a couple things that the instructions for the camera weren't quite clear on. Good stuff.
There was another photographer there as well for a little while. Driving a little white miata with grey stripes that hustled down the gap pretty well too. He had a lens that cost as much as my camera. It was a $1,600 200mm lens with built in stabalization. Pretty crazy ****.

How fast did you go down, and how did the jeans hold up? In another thread, one person was bashing me and said that jeans will last for only 12" of road sliding. It was posted as proven fact, which I find hard to believe. Your first hand "testing" results would be interesting.
David's pretty cool. I talked to him a bit recently also. Darryl's a cool guy also. Last I talked to him was a couple weeks ago. I then sent him email and he apologized for being so busy that he didn't have much time to talk to me. I felt that an apology was not necessary, as I understand he's making a living and that should be his priority over shooting the **** with me. However, that says something about his personality. He's a really good guy.
Maybe a lot of busa guys have come up to stay for the week.

Each accident is different but if your not rolling and are sliding on one part of the pants I'd say 12" is about right. Even if you are rolling around they don't last long.
Here's the last page from a recent gear test:

I know each wreck will be different, but I'm just asking about this one case.
The test results you posted are very interesting though. I think that it is a bit decieving that the denim got a zero. What I mean is that they essentially called jeans the "baseline"....which would put it at zero. I think it would have been better to have shorts and a t shirt as the baseline. I know it's crazy to ride like that, but I think the article would have had a much better impact, especially on those that ride in shorts. If they'd done that, then the jeans would have gotten something other than zeros, giving a better representation of the protection of denim, be it however minimal.
I'd also like to see more about this test. Do you have any more info on how they did the tests or anything? oh, I did find that if you take the URL of your pic, change the digit at the end, you can pull up the other pages of this article:
example:

I won't post them all, and further hijack this thread with it.
Sime of these suits I've not even heard of. Are they pretty well in order of price?

The test is from ride magazine, it's British and most of the suits can be found in the states if you look hard enough. The base prices for the suits are listed in brit pounds.
I'm guessing they didn't use shorts and tee shirts because they wanted to show people like you how useless denim is. A lot of people think it provides protection but in reality its not much use over a few mph, its better then nothing though.

Just how much protection is it compared to skin though?
Something tells me so many people will preach so much about wearing gear, that they don't preach to people about wearing a seatbelt in a car. Motorcycle leathers are primarily there to protect skin, and MINOR impacts. Seatbelts are there to save lives. Big difference.

Start a thread about the importance of gear in crashes and bring up these issues. I will be more then willing to debate them with you there if you wish.
