Fontana's drag strip might be going away
While at the street legal race last night I was told that a new memorabilia store is going in right where the current drag strip sits. There have been talks of moving the strip to the north side of the speedway but at this point sponsorship problems are holding it back.
They will run the rest of this years schedule out but there might not be a 2006 drag racing season from Fontana. I will work with the individual I got this information from and do everything I can to keep this track alive.
If anyone has ANY information PLEASE chime in.

Speed Scene Live has received this reply from the president of California Speedway regarding the dragstrip. Aparently, racers have been sending letters of support.
>Thank you for writing. Is someone asking people to write us? This is the
>third similar note we've recieved in a very short period of time. If so
>would you please ask them to help us stop these rumors and discontinue the
>"campaign"? We're NOT considering closing down the Dragway. The truth is
>that we have a request before our Board of Director's for an enhancement
>project to the facility that would interfere with the current location of
>the Dragway. For that reason only, we have not yet begun to book our 2006
>schedule.
>
>Please help us spread the word, no one at the California Speedway is
>interested in shutting the dragway down. We agree, this market is
>underserved for drag racing and it is a viable motorsports product. Our
>plan is to continue to do anything we can to preserve and grow this asset.
>Thank you for your continued support.

man they need to organize that place a little bit more because they allow way to many people to get in and then they run only one time. we got there between 2:30 and 3:00 and we were only able to get one run in. now i know why i dont see a lot of the cars that go to actual events dont bother unless they have too. it sucks that this is the only 1/4 mile track besides the once a year event at pomona.
Honestly, you are lucky to have even got a tech card coming that late. They allowed more cars than usual(9 run groups + UTI = 500 cars) so it was actually way more crowded than normal. Not to mention the TWO oil downs.

Auto Club Dragway At California Speedway To Open In May
November 14th, 2005
California Dragway, which has been in existence since 2001 in Lot 1 behind the Speedway’s main grandstand, will be relocated to Lots 6 and 8 and will be renamed the Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway.
The announcement was made today by California Speedway President Gillian Zucker, Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) Senior Vice President of Marketing Mike Johnson and National Hot Rod Association President Tom Compton during a press conference at the Speedway. The announcement was part of the speedway’s plan to develop a new midway in the area where the current dragstrip is located.
Construction of the Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway will take place between December and April with the 2006 season kicking off in May. The current drag strip will continue operation until February.
“Auto Club of Southern California has made a huge commitment in recent months to growing drag racing throughout the nation and more locally in Southern California,” Zucker said. “Auto Club's passion for motorsports is only surpassed by their commitment to safety on our roadways. We are thrilled to be able to combine those two objectives with our naming of the Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway. Auto Club’s vast promotional assets are sure to positively impact all drag racing programs at the new Auto Club Dragway, from street legal to major NHRA sanctioned events.”
The Automobile Club of Southern California signed a five-year entitlement agreement for the new quarter-mile strip, home to a very competitive Division 7 Junior Drag Racing program sponsored by the Auto Club and the AAA-sponsored NHRA Street Legal Drag Racing program. In addition to these events, NHRA’s Summit Series, Pacific Street Car Association and Super Categories use the strip.
“California Speedway is one of the premier motorsports venues in the country and we are proud to have been an active partner since the track opened its gates in 1997,” Johnson said. “We are especially appreciative for the opportunity to help sustain such an important regional venue for street legal events. As the nation’s largest AAA affiliate, the Auto Club places a premium on safety and responsible driving. Expanding our relationship with the Speedway to include the Auto Club Dragway fits very well within AAA’s national sponsorship of the NHRA Street Legal Program that encourages enthusiasts of all ages to always race responsibly on organized drag strips and not on our streets.”
NHRA officials have also awarded the new drag strip with two competitive events in 2006, a NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division event in June and the NHRA West SPORTSnationals in September.
“To maintain and preserve the right to race is very important to NHRA,” Compton said. “We are pleased that the California Speedway shares in this vision and we look forward to expanding our partnership to work to grow the drag strip and the possibilities of future events. California Speedway officials have shown a great commitment to the drag racing community in Southern California and NHRA by building a permanent home for the drag strip on the north side of its multi-purpose auto racing facility.”

I hope they set it up to have a tail wind this time.
Things are good over here. Congrats on the win last weekend.
Hey, I can't get a hold of JP to find out what's up with the SRT EMS. Anything you can find out for me? The natives are restless.

Well I spent the day at Fontana yesterday for the PSCA finals. Mike English and Bruce Schwartz kept mentioning the 2006 schedule including 4 PSCA events, 4 NHRA sportsman, Alcohol funny car & rail, VW drags, but there was no REAL mention of street legals.
I can't wait to actually see the street legal schedule.
They did say the new strip would have 600 feet of concrete and a longer shut down.

it would be nice to see street legals twice a month, at least. maybe if that happened, i wouldnt have to show up rediculously early because 11234623 people want to see how fast their PT cruisers are, or there full size trucks. although i did see an f250 run 13's
