650+ cc would be a handful for someone new to riding ... on a sportbike at least.

i learned to ride on an '83 Suzuki GS650 .. and honestly, it was so old, and they're so heavy .. it wasn't fast at all (as in AT ALL). If i were you, i just wouldn't want to get stuck with something gutless.

i learned on an 85 interceptor 750, i don't think it was too big of a bike to learn on since it is pretty old/heavy. i had no problem handling it, although my room mate crashed it 3 weeks after i bought it.

i've been riding an 82 cb650 now as my first bike.

i'd say, the old cruiser type 650s are not too much to handle at all, they are not that fast, at all.. like someone else said, it's not a sportsbike. but it's pretty manageable. picked mine up for 600 bucks w/ 34k on the ticker.

I bought a new '76 cb550k and rode it for 10 years. Out of 18 bikes I've had, that one I liked best. Was light enough to manhandle, enough HP for 1 person, great in the corners, and over 50mpg.

those are great choices if you are handy with a wrench... they need tlc, but can be very rewarding and very fun. there is a whole movement for these vintage gals, and the folks are fun and dedicated. be forewarned... they do not stop like modern motorbikes, and can be out paced by the most megar of modern cars, so ride carefully. keep the tires modern for a good sticky compound and keep your eyes open when riding

i just sold my 83 cb550 and it still pulled real hard (for a 21 year old bike with 6900 miles on it) and never gave me any problems. I loved it. good starter bike imho
