Cost to replace master cylinder and brake pads?
I have a 1996 Honda Accord EX (4 cyl), w/ ABS; 127,000 miles. My brakes were failing and I paid to have the master cylinder and rear brake pads replaced. Costs were $350 for cylinder plus $108 labor; $61 for rear pads and resuface rear rotors plus $144 for labor---total was $720.
I can't find a quote for a new master brake cylinder for my make/model w/ ABS (even OEM from Honda dealership), over $140. Most new cylinders were between $90 and $125.
Was I gouged (they knew I couldn't drive the car, unsafe brakes)? Does anyone know actual costs (part/labor) for replacing cylinder in 1996 Honda Accord?
Thank you. Karen

Karen listen carefully.........the master from a dealer is no more than 125 dollars labor to install should be no more than 60-100 dollars brake fluid around 3-5 dollars..........the price for rear pads and resurface rotors sounds in the ball park....first off get a quote, written if possible from a dealer on a brake master then .....get ur receipt and go back to the shop and ask WHY u got charged soooooooo much for the master cylinder and DEMAND some money back or else....

Thanks for your input/support. I called them on it; they claimed they were merely passing along the "list price" quoted by their parts supplier. But they returned $238 to me, took out the other part; installed the Honda OEM cylinder (I called the dealership to confirm they'd sold them one w/in the past day; made them show me the receipt for it at the garage).
So, they're either deceitful or clueless, regardless, it pays to stand up for yourself and I won't be going back. One for the small guy/girl.
Thanks again.

I paid $90 at O'Reily Auto Parts with a $30 core charge for a master cylinder for my 94 with ABS,and about $45 for some Satisfied ceramic pads from Advance Auto Parts.Did it myself in about an hour and a half. There's no reason an ABS master cylinder should be more expensive than a non ABS unit for the 94-97 Accord, the only difference is the diameter of the lines,if I'm not mistaken.NEVER go to a dealer unless it's absolutely necessary (or your car is under warranty) and the parts/labor can't be sourced from elsewhere.I should know;I work at a dealership
I am glad, I am so glad you stood up for yourself and got YOUR money back!!!
People do take advantage of other people at any chance they have.....
