Cleaning Transmission
I just purchased an 89 Si tranny and its filthy. Is it ok to just hose it off or will I run the risk of damaging anything?
Better safe than sorry.
Thanks HT

Take it to your local machine shop and have them run it thru their parts washer...it's like an industrial sized dishwasher.
I just had it done and it cost me $25 bucks. came out perfect.

Wait just one second!!
Is he talking about opening up the trans and then cleaning stuff or just as it sits on the garage floor!!!!
If it's not opened up here is what I'd recommend;
Put it up on wood blocks and carefully clean around the openings for the axles, speedo hook-up, and any breather (I keep thinking that there is one). Have it sitting up-right, as it would in the car.
Then put duct tape over any of the openings and clean it with simple green and a brush. Hosing it off every now and then.
If it looks like any of the duct tape is coming off, stop, dry that area and put new duct tape on it.
You really don't want any junk entering the trans.
