Default First time w/ Stainless Steel.... TIG.

It's been a while since I've touched a TIG machine.. I usually do mild steel and aluminum.

Decided to practice on some stainless trying to keep the color as well as keeping the uniformity/penatration of the weld, overheated a bit at the end.

The other end of the weld I was trying to keep it small and deep into the joint.

3/32" metal, 1/16" rod and tungsten 18-19psi or Argon.

Looks really good considering its been a while since youve done it . Like you said...its a little hot at the end of the weld. Turn it down a tad and slow down a little more at the sides to get better penetration(looks like a little undercut on the smaller weld...but i may be the pic). Also ive found that using 20-22psi of gasflow gives better penetration and better color on stainless of that thickness. Good job man

Yea, I'm gonna bump up the argon and maybe get a gas lense too.

Either I need to work faster towards the end of the weld or be easy on the pedal. Its hard for me to work slow though.

It's easier to let off the pedal and yes a lense makes all the differance.

Yea, I've always heard good things about a lense have yet to try one though.

You will never go back after you try it (unless you have to fit in a tight spot)

Just Friday at work, I learned something about gas lenses. One of the night shift guys had used my welding machine on Thursday night and had taken off my gas lens and put on a regular collet body. He left my parts in the little drawer on top of the machine, along with a few others I had in there.

I put the torch together and suddenly, the nice gold color I had the day before went to ****. I checked the gas, checked for any leaks, debris in the gas lens and all kinds of stuff. I even swapped out the gas lens. Finally, I put the regular cup back on and without a gas lens it welded fine. I then put on an old WELDCRAFT gas lens and it worked fine. I then put the new generic POS on that the company had bought (I brought in the weldcraft) and the weld went to **** again.

I suspect that the screen in the generic lens was coated with something that wasn't very friendly to the heat. Either way, I learned that gas lenses are not all the same.

I may post up a pic in a few in another thread of some of the welds...I'm a bit bored.
