Air Intake = more fuel consumption??
I have gotten mixed answers to this question. If I put an air intake system on my civic, will I use more gas? It also says I will gain ~5hp, is this even noticeable? Thanks.
I would say yes. I dont feel however that it will noticable enouph for you to care. This also goes for how much faster your car will be.....intake will free up some air but wont do much.
with my RAI i noticed, no power increase, loud deaper noise, and 25 miles more to my tank of gas.
so in my situation i just got more gas mileage and a deep loud acceleration

There, fixed that for you. He won't feel **** for power.

when i got my zx3 focus i had a aem cold ait intake and the gas mileage was supposed to be better but the noise it made when i was WOT i loved so i always would drive it hard which we all know leads to shitty MPG. But if you were to put on the intake sys and drive normally than yes it will help u out. i felt the increase more at the top end of the rpm(like your supposed to on a cai) dont expect to put it on and be running 10s like in the fast and the furious. you should feel a lilttle more throttle response.

lol, who says he wont feel anything? I put just a SRI on my Civic and felt a little more power in the mid range. Im not saying it gave +50hp but I hate when people discredit intakes even on a D-series. Sure you are not going to get large power gains out of it but for people who want to make their car a little more drivable and fun I think they are fine. Obviously if you want big power dont put on an intake and expect big power but they do have their place, even on a D.

That is the stupidest reasoning I've ever heard. That depends on if the driver wants to 'punch' it or not. Overall, you will be getting BETTER gas mileage because you're replacing the air filter.

Yes it depends on if the driver wants to punch it or not, and chances are after putting on an intake the driver will want to punch it more often. I know I did. Now like you said if you can restrain yourself and not punch it then you will notice the increase in MPG.

When I replaced the intake on my friend's 92 DX he hadnt changed the air filter for like 5 years so he got a huge MPG and accelleration increase going from his dirt encrusted (literally) airbox to a tube with cone filter.

Yes. Your answer.

Yes. Your answer.
Engineer Speak-
Driven under identical conditions as prior to modification the CAI -should- reduce pumping losses over a stock intake. This is assuming that a stock intake is inefficent for a given application, and the CAI is more efficent. Same with exhaust, reduce pumping losses, the engine doesn't work as hard, leading to better fuel consumption.
This is under identical circumstances, truth be told, you are more likely to drive like an *** hat post-mods then pre-mods, resulting in losses in fuel economy.

If you drive normally you may see an increase in mileage. If you drive faster than you should you'll most likely use more fuel.
Either way, not much difference over stock.

CAI would definitely burn more fuel than stock... RAM should burn close to stock or less due to hot air=less air=less fuel... but the RAM with filter would ease engine breathing so it won't spend energy on getting its air.
there are other factors to look at but that's the general theory
