Default Weeee... Bent some valves... So yeah, make sure you tighten your timing belt

Well it looks like my plan to rebuild the R has been moved ahead a few months. The car has been idling really low lately and I really didn't think anything about it. So yesterday I pull into my neighbors house and the car dies... not a big deal, it's done that before due to the weird/low idle. An hour later, I jump in the car to go home and the car makes the most horrible noise I've ever heard from her.

So I push her home (1 block, damn I'm out of shape) and pull the valve cover and it all looks good. Check the timing belt and its has about an inch of slack in each directions. Damnit! So I check the cam gears and they are in sync, freaking sweet. I tighten up the belt (correct this time, make sure you tighten it with the slack on the intake side, not the exhaust side ) and start her up. She fired right up but sounded really, really rought and would not idle.

So I park her in the garage and start drinking. I talk to Matt and he told me to check the gears when the motor was at top dead center. Doh, kind of forgot about that. Get home from the bar and I spin the motor to TDC and yep, the intake was advanced one tooth. So I loosen the belt, move the intake back one tooth, tighten the belt up and she started right up and idles like a champ. Hell yeah!

Flash to this morning, I jump in the car and head to work. About 2 miles into the trip the car is running like a ***** and won't keep and idle Turn around and head back home. Check the timing belt and its tight and everything is in sync.

So yeah, i think i bent some valves. I planed on bulding the head and putting higher compression pistons in anyways, but not for a few months. Guess this kicks my plans up a little and I'll be looking for a beater this weekend to get me by untill I can get the R back up to par.

Moral of the story: Keep an eye on thouse timing belts. Luckly I didn't loose any teeth on the belt or jump enough teeth to cause some major damage.

i jumped 3 teeth while pulling into the pits after a session at watkins glen last year...

end result: broken valve

1 tooth= bent
3 teeth= broke

no pun intended

I've bene planning on doing a GSR head swap, ITB's and some high compression pistons anyways so this is just a reason to do it sooner then later.

I've also been looking at getting another car, but was going to wait till Christmas for some kick *** deals... I guess that is getting moved up also

My main problem is I'm in the middle of re-modeling my house so I'm not sure I'll have alot of time to work on the R right now. Guess I'll be tracking the beater at WTDR Exbo

That sucks dude. I call BS on you pimping the Neon. The only think you can pimp is the toilet after drinking all day.

Craig, a buddy of mine's aunt has a '92 740 Turbo wagon she'll let go for a good price. Just the thing to raise hell in and bring supplies home from Lowe's and Home Depot

Upper twos, maybe? She wants it to go to a Volvo family, and I'd love to buy it, but I can't give her a fair price.

bent valves are sure fun....I lost a whole cylinder a while ago...0 compression. used the A/C to get the idle up. Gettin the head remachined is the biggest expense. I bent 4 exhaust and 3 intake. G/L with the fix....O and why are you going with a GSR head? cheaper, turbo?

Straighter intake ports will work better with ITB's, cheaper, easier to fine, and higher compression (smaller compression chamber) then the ITR head.

Well that really sucks, how long was the belt on? Has it always been loose you think or did it loosen over time? Wonder what caused it to loosen?

Check down in the forum some dude is selling a set of A-sport ITBs

The belt was only on for a few months. I was a dumb *** when I tightened it last week and didn't do it right. I left the slack on the exhaust side when I tightened instead of the intake side where the tensioner takes the slack out It's my own fault, but thankfully i caught it soon enought to not need any major work. Atleast it didn't break at NOPI in Atlanta, other wise that would have suck bigger donkey *****.

.....I've been doing a lot of research.

The gsr head ported vs an itr head ported will not show any gains.

Just port your itr head and get some b16/ itr head compatible itb's!

It really depends on if I plan on keeping the hatch I have. If I keep it, then I want to make it an LS/VTEC since it already has an LS motor in it. In that case, I'll buy another head (gsr), throw that on the ITR and then take the ITR head and put my stock cams back in it (put the Spec B's in the gsr head) and put that on the hatch.

If i don't keep the hatch, then I'll keep my itr head and re-work that with the itb's.

All depends on if I can sell the hatch. I have to throw the 5 lug on it first and all the parts I have then see if I can unload it.

Anybody want a 93 CX eg hatch with an LS motor, LS tranny, 2 plate clutch, JDM ITR 5 lug, front ITR sway (gsr LCAs), A Spec re-enforcement bar, ITR fly and some other misc. parts?

This sounds like more of a concern than anything else.
