question about cluster connections

Default question about cluster connections
does anyone know what the blue connector on the back of the gauges is? According to the the Honda manual it connects to the amplifier unit but that is all it says. Anyone know what it does? I've noticed that not all civics and crxs have it so I am really baffled.

I know my automatic '89 CRX DX has it but my '88 CRX Si doesn't. Hopefully people post more info and you can narrow it down.
