Its possible that you have a bad VSS. Mabye try to replace it with your old one, not sure if it fits or not. Also, is it plugged in the whole way?

GymkhanaGTI- what wheels are on that white hatch of yours. i just got an 89 and im a hardcore domestic racer and dont know much about imports yet, i want a good looking set of "black" (or any dark shade) wheels. thanks

bah, mine started doin that and then just quit on me, ohh well ive been drivin around for a year now w/o one. i dont need it.

it could just be that the speedo cable is loose or ur vss is goin out, im just too lazy to fix it, maybe one day

After my d16y8 swap, my speedo wasn't working at all. Thought my speedo cable went bad, but after a day it started showing some life. It would start bouncing a little after some hard acceleration. So I tried making sure the speedo cable was plugged in firmly. It was. I talked to the guy that did my swap, and he said sometimes the speedo cable tends to "settle in" before it works properly. I thought that was weird, but it was true. After a week, the speedo is back to normal.

Weird!

just pull out the speed cable out of the tranny and stick in back in but harder, it helped for me when mine started going crazy.
