inline fuel pump installation, i need help!!!!
does any help me with installing a inline fuel pump for my 5th gen prelude? i know how to connect the fuel lines but i need help wiring it. thanks
You should be able to see a positive side and negative side marked on the terminals of the pump. It more than likely has threaded post terminals on it where you can place a ring tongue terminal and clamp it with a nut. Also, it may be a spade connector. Try to place the pump in a location that's dry where corrosion will be less of an issue.
When wiring you have a few choices. You can put a switch in to operate when the pump comes on or off, or just wire it to an active circuit when the key is on. You'll need an electrical meter or circuit tester to check and see what circuit is on when a key is in an on position, start position, or off position. Some come with sharp points on the testers so you can stab through the insulation without cutting it away and leaving bare wire hanging out. One other thing, I mentioned putting the pump on a switch earlier, you can even combine the two methods to make a kill switch setup keeping the car from running when you don't want it to (or protecting your investments).
To wire in line so it's operational when the car is running, turn the key on to the run position. A manual of some kind will help you locate an under dash or underhood wire color to give you an idea of a supply feed. Check the amp draw listed on the pump and the fuse for that circuit in the car to assure you will have enough amps to supply the pump without blowing fuses all the time. If the pump has a high current draw, then we can discuss relays another time.
Splice the feed wire to the positive wire for the pump. An inline fuse just off your feed splice will ensure no car fires if bare wire ever hits metal. That's up to you. Run your wire to the pump. Hook it up.
The negative side is easy. You just need a good ground location (without paint or rust or undercoating). Drill a hole in the body or frame somewhere near the pump, put a short wire to it and then bolt the wire with a terminal to the floor. It wouldn't hurt to sand aorund the hole to get more contact with bare metal. Make sure you don't drill up through the floor and carpet in the car from the bottom.
Test it out! You should hear a hum when the key goes to the "run" position.
