Default how do you guys tell which motor is which?

without looking at the block code how can you tell which motor is which?

all i know ITR = red valve cover
GSR = black mostly rectangle
b16 = black but kinda look like an LS
LS = bumps and no spark plug covers
h22 = kinda tall
b20 not shure

i might be wrong, how can you guys tell which motor is which so easily. jsut tell me what to look for. like before i was like how the **** you tell a 94-97 from a 98+ then my friend told me what to look for now I can easily tell. so tell me what to look for

well....if it has to be aside from the block code, then these are some of the other things I notice on the motors....

ITR = red valve cover and black heat shield for the headers, IM like that on the B16s and of course....vtec solenoid.
GSR = intake manifold is different from that of the LS / ITR...and even though I shouldn't need to....I look for the vtec solenoid.
b16 = I look for the vtec solenoid and the black valve cover with similar IM of the LS
LS = valve cover does not support the spark plug wire cover and there's no vtec solenoid

h22 = kinda tall and noticeably larger......the vtec solenoid is located behind the distributor too...whereas on the B series motors, they're in front of the distributor.
b20 = noticeable larger, similar if not the same valve cover as an LS and IM too....and no vtec solenoid.

Now....if you're looking for the YEAR itself...without the block code...then I have no idea. However, on the LS motors, its easier. The earlier B18Bs and B18As valve covers had those...."humps" if you wanna call it that. The later ones possibly as early as a 95? ( I have a 96 ) has a valve cover similar in design to those with vtec.
But...difference being that you have nowhere to bolt in the spark plug cover that you can buy for vtec valve covers. At least, not that I've ever seen.

oh...well now...that would be difficult. And without looking at the block code???
Well...I've seen a few B20vtecs....and all I can say is aside from it looking like someone had to horseshoe that **** in there....it depends on the head they used. B16 or GSR?
LS-V....is kinda hard to tell for me. I'd actually have to look at the block code.

just combine what naruto said, vtec head characteristics on top of a block. if you see a b series head, the block is not gonna be h22 for one.

why do you need to know btw? if there is not engine code, you probalby shouldnt be looking at it anyway.
