998 Vs 954
So was at the duc dealer this afternoon and he started really dissing my RR saying the 998 would take it because of its added torque and HP.
998
Horsepower: 123 HP @ 9,750 rpm
Torque: 71.5 ft. lbs. @ 8,000
Weight: 436 lbs.
954
Horsepower: 154bhp
Torque:74.6 lbs of torque.
Weight: 370.0 pounds
I think... NOT.

i think he was envious!
the duck might pull early in a drag race, with the V-twin, but you'll smoke him shortly thereafter, like when you get to the top of 1st.

that guy should be fired. 1L twins and 1L 4s NEVER run together. Now a 750 4 vs a 1L twin... But the 1L 4 has no competition.
If he was talkign pure class and exclusivity he might have had a case... but the idiot wasnt...

thats kinda like when i was at a suzuki dealership and the guy there was telling this totally clueless guy that the hayabusa will outhandle GSXRs, R1, etc...
they are just trying to make a sale, they dont care what you get or if you kill yourself.

**** it , It's ALL rider. These comments from stupid people don't count. What counts is railing around the outside of some dumbass on a 996 with your Frankenstein 95 CBR600 you bought for 600$..
did you see what kind of bike won the SBK World Championship this last season?
i doubt the duc dealer was talkin about a drag race or a highway race...he's probably talkin bout on a track...who rates their motorcycles by how fast they go in a straight line anyways?

954 is unable to compete in SBK Superbike in the class you are refering to. The RC51 is the competition for the 998.
Meester Park,
the 954 would WAX the 998 up the straits and into the twisties like a bad carrot.
The only bike in its (954) class is the R1. IMNSHO
the 998 DUC is a beautiful bike though, and as stated in another class Especially @ $17 large.

Yes, but provided the Ducati owner purchased the Biposto model -- he will be the one going home with the woman
Duc's oooze sexiness.[Modified by figment, 3:25 PM 3/1/2002]
there's a reason the 954 doesn't compete..it's not because it's too great of a bike either...it wouldn't last in SBK competition

Those Italians could teach the Japanese a thing or two! hehe
I'm not dissing the duc! Although I'm looking for a duc-eater sticker for my bike
Could you post another pic of that yellow thang! Please?

i don't own a duc either..my point is just that the speed or power comparison that you're talking about isn't that important...to me anyways. drag racing or straight line racing on a bike is nothing compared to RIDING a bike..it's easy to point the thing straight and switch gears
you need to READ UP on the 954RR bud, thats all I gots to say.
This should get you started: http://www.2wf.com/articles/bike_tes...A6049FF5_2.asp
Oh, and read the specs on weight, a lighter bike usualy out handles a heavier one.
Yeah the 998 gets more lean angle, but not as much torque and not as much HP so all that noise about downshifting is irrelivant. Equal riders and the DUC will be sniffing/ingesting the RRs exhaust.

i get both of your points...i understand the 954 is a very quick and capable bike..but so is the 998. we'll just have to wait till there's a shootout on a track and a magazine does a review about it. a lot of bikes can smoke the 998 according to magazines statistics...i think in the back of Motorcyclist they compare the 1/4 mile times of almost every commercially produced sportbike.
my question to you is, if the 998 is slower, heavier, less powerful than all of those other bikes, why do they keep winning championships?

because they are not in the same class, thats what you've been told several times already.
They will only meet on the street.
