head porting
well i picked up some stuff for an engine build a few months ago and i still havent gotten around to installing it. initially i was going to just slap it all together and hope for the best. but now im thinking ill go ahead and port the head while i have some downtime. only thing is i really dont kno how to go about it. i want it done right and i want it done by somoene who knows hondas and knows what they are doing. i dont want soe skimpy port that wont do much, and i also dont want some extreme port that will not only cost a ton, but be too much for my application.
i also really dont want to deal with the hassle of shipping if at all possible. so if anyone knows of a good place to get porting done in the baltimore area, please speak up.
also what information should i know to give to the porter? i mean im not just gonna drop it off and say "here port this" am i? should they know my setup to match the port to? or are there standards for porting that i should choose based on my setup?
price is also a factor. how much am i gonna spend on this? id like to keep it under 300 if i can, 200-250 will be even better.
anything you guys can suggest will be appreciated.
heres my setup so you guys can give me suggestions for what will be best suited for my setup.
gsr engine
gsr head
skunk2 stage 2 cams
JDM ITR pistons (P73-00) (approx. 11.6:1 comp)
thanks

well like i said, im not looking for a full race all out port job. just something better suited for my setup then the stock head is.
ive never looked at prices, ive just been told that a port job would cost about a couple hundred bucks

well i sent portflow an email. they offer a variety of work in what they call their standard headwork and its 900 bucks.
i just dont know if everything in that package is completely necessary. like the valve job and everything. the head already has new seals, but i dont know if its necessary to replace them upon doing work to the head.
also, is portflows port job a standard? as in is it the same on all the heads they do? they dont really specify on the site on if theres different levels of porting. if it is a standard, would it be overkill for my setup?

Tom does very good work but beyond that I really can't comment on what other shops do or charge,it's not very professional. But I can tell you that in most cases a good valve job will get you 75-80 percent of the flow of a basic port job.The seals will need to be replaced even if they are new because when the head is cleaned they need to be removed to get the spring seats off and can't be put back on.
mill, valve job, and probably replacing exhaust valve guides we charge 450 for all that so add another 400 or more for portwork and you see that its not cheap but its more than just porting

can you explain how a valve job accounts for 75-80 % of the flow of a port job? im not denying it, ive just never heard that and i want to learn.
i understand about professionalism stuff. i was just wondering in your opinion if a port job by them would be overkill for my setup.

Because in a factory head like a honda a basic street port job is really just blending the port into the seats and thinning the guides down.If you take to much material away in a car that doesn't have alot of mods or is for street use only it will make the car sluggish until the airspeed gets built up at higher rpm's and will be a chore to drive when you have to wind every gear to 6000 or more just to get moving. It's the same as putting a very big cam in and leaving the rest of the motor stock, you will kill all the velocity in the port.
The factory valve job isn't for performance it's for engine life, that's why a stock honda motor will run for sometimes a few hundred thousand miles w/o burning a valve or leaking down from the valves.A performance valve job doesn't have these concerns it is made to make power at the cost of valve job life.

so then whats the difference in a port job by say portflow or RLZ or anyone else like that, then the basic street port job.
also what exactly is a valve job? same as a 3 angle grind?

im sorry if im putting you on the spot with the questions, lol. im not really asking what they do exactly but rather what the difference in the type of port jobs are. like you said the basic street port job is just taking off some material but, what are the real port jobs like? reshaping the ports? in any specific way?
im just trying to see if it would be worth it to go with a "real" port job like rlz or portflow, or if a "basic" port job would be suficient for my needs.

There are so many variables to porting a head like squareing the intake port entrance, welding the ports or chambers, adding larger valves, raising the exhaust port exit and roof, etc that you need to talk to the person you are having do the work and decide w/him what is best for your engine and use.Call a bunch of porters and get there opinions on what they would do and go w/who you seem most comfortable with/or can afford, sorry but that's the best advice I can give you,all the people you mentioned will do a very good job and I'm sure you will be happy with the outcome.
well im gonna be using this car (eventually) for road course so im limited as to what im allowed to do in terms of porting, i was just reading the rules and it seems i can only portmatch and cant port beyond 1 inch into the head. i think thats correct. ill read over the rules again.
anyway thanks for the help.
