Ok, I replaced the psngr side axle seal and drove down the street. The axle popped out of the tranny, so I pushed it back to my garage and slid it back in.

Now the car makes really forceful thumping noises when it's in gear. Any idea what this might be?

 

Update: It also thumps and makes the whole car shake when I've got both front wheels off the ground while in gear.

Do you think it's the differential or just a bad drive axle?

Bump cause im gettin a wierd thumping noise as well, and one of my axle boots has ripped so im thinking its the axle also.

I'm thinking it's either the diff or the axle. The reman'd axle I just bought is seized, so I'll try to get another one tomorrow and let you know.

I broke a prybar tip trying to get the old axle out. I ended up hammering a smaller prybar deeper in towards the seal to pop it out. My 32mm socket plugs the hole perfectly while I wait for a new axle.

 

If i get the HA Sport axles for my b16 do i also need to buy an intermediate shaft?? Does the alxle set come with it?? I think there is a prob with the intermediate shaft cause that thump is like right under my feet in the drivers side.

You can try checking the 3-bolt mounting bracket for the intermediate shaft to make sure it's tight, but the problem is most likely with your drive axles.

The thumping started after I removed my psnger side drive axle, so either I bent the differential or messed up the axle. We'll find out today. I'll be so excited if I have to pull my tranny to replace the diff....

 

yeah ill be pist if its my diff(y71 w/ lsd) Hopefully its just the axles, but its wierd cause it only does it under load, and when im not accelerating. Also the engine could be warm, but whatever is causing this prob has to be cold, cause after im on the highway for a little while it stops pretty much all together....

 

Check your ball joints too

I replaced the axle tonight, and that was the problem!

No more clicking when I turn, no more thumping at speed. Thank god my diff is ok.

 

good for u man, im goin to get some axles tomorrow... Only one axle is torn, but i guess i should replace both cause the thumping feels like is commin from the drivers side, but the passenger axle is the one thats ripped, thats y i thought it might be the int shaft. Im hopin my outcome is as good as yours.

 

Now that the new drive axle is installed, the car it pulls to the right while at highway speeds.... *sigh*
