Settling insurance with StateFarm?
I'm sure there is a few people on here who had to settle with StateFarm as a total loss or stolen. I am just curious and seeking pointers to when my date comes on 10-5-5, 30 days past it was stolen. I know its' not coming back. Any tips or pointers to get maximum dollars is appreciated. Also, did they pay for all your mods? I didn't have much but I did have receipts and credit card bills to prove them.
Any help is appreciated.

i don't have state farm but it was a bitch settling. it took me about 1-2 months to settle. i wasn't covered for mods even though I had all my receipts. then the problem of what the car was worth stock arose. i went to 4 different acura dealerships getting quotes for what the car would sell for. in the end, they actually paid me a lil more than what sticker + taxes was on a new R.

...so how is this relevant to this topic? topic is, settling, with state farm.
original poster: statefarm can vary depending which branch you are insured under. you may want to disclose that.

I have State Farm and settled a total loss but not for a theft, mine was wrecked. It took about 20 days from the point of me starting the process till it was settled.
In the end I got the complete value of the car since it was almost brand new and I hadn't made many payments (this was still in 2001). They also paid me back my deposit. They paid entirely for my car rental from the moment the claim started till it was settled.
I didn't have any mods so I can't give you any personal experience other than what I was told by my agent about mods, which was: "If you plan to have any mods insured they must be documented with all reciepts and pictures taken at the local office."
My very strong advice is to read your policy from front to back and if there's anything you don't completely understand, go out of your way to get it explained to you clearly.
You as an insured driver have many rights but there are also many clauses which restrict claims and coverage. Your policy may vary.
Best of luck

it seems like a long process in the US, up here when our car was stolen they made us wait 4 days before they'd process the claim, within 10 days we were flying to Toronto to pick up the new R with the insurance cheque. we just dug up alot of info on how rare the car was and as for mods they gave us 50% value for the alarm and stereo and that was about it. for a base price they looked at the 3 98 ITR's forsale across Canada on autotrader and gave use the average which was $18900 plus mods and taxes which totalled $22500, we paid $22700 for the car 3 yrs to the day it was stolen.
I don't know what it is like down there but up here if your not satisfied with what they are giving you, you can request them to replace it with the same car, yr, mileage, condition, etc.
sorry it's not state farm but most insurance companies should follow similer guildelines.

I have Tom Siok as my agent from Schaumburg, IL. I have my insurance through my Dad who has been with Siok for 30 years and has been a stand-up guy all along.

state farm is pretty good payout wise they even upped my cars value by $200 for tinted windows when it only cost $100 for tint, i did have to haggle about the price they quoted for resale because they were using averages from around the country i showed them prices in local papers for the same car that were over$1000 higher and they gave in

State Farm is pretty good at payout for their customers. When my old gsr was stolen, they recooped me extra for the loss. I had bought the car for like 11,000 and recieved 14,700 because that was the "price they were going for at dealers."

I had state farm and was in an accident on the way to the Expo this year. After hearing some horror stories I went and did some research on what some other Type R's were going for, but it turned out it I didn't need to. They totalled the car and were very fair with the value they came up with. State Farm
. As for mods, you'll have to check your ploicy. I know they only cover up to a certain amount. Most of the stuff I had on the car wasn't damaged so I was going to take them off the car. Then I ended up buying it back from them and selling it so someone to make into a track car. Your case sounds a little different so having receipts and that will probably help. I was really happy with State Farm and I hope everything goes as smoothly for you as it did for me.

i thought you weren't allowed to buy back the car in illinois if it is totalled unless its more than 10yrs old? One buddy of mine couldnt get his aftermarket parts off the car nor did was he allowed to buy it back. They had to put it up for auction which was the only way he could recover the car and his mods.

instead of talking to us. you should be talking with him (guy in link below) he makes the final decision. we can say you will be a millionaire after this total loss, in the end you will only be able to take this guys advice. in other words this thread is useless in all respects and means nothing in the end....

that is correct.. his car was registered in WI I believe..
and to the thread starter, it doesn't matter if your agent is superman.. the claims person is who you will be dealing with on all this and they could care less.. took me 3 weeks, with a written presentation on the status of my car and lots of research into the selling price of others in order to get a reasonable settlement.. My car had few mods, but I got nothing for them..

I've dealt with state farm; they settled the property damage within the week and gave me what I wanted. I produced receipts and such for mods and other things. Medical however was dragged out for 2 years.

i've had state farm....very good company as far as giving ur money back. Got $2500 extra for my 98 gsr I totalled and $1300 more for my 98 EK.
As far as the other parts, bitches stole my ecu, my stock sturt bar, Mini Disk player, CDs and my light bulbs (lol)....we only showed them the receipt and they just told us to go pick up the check. Only thing we didn't get money back for was those CD's. Which I didn't care bout much. They just said if we wan'ted to pick up the check, to go to a State Farm place and that's it. We got a phat check for all the interior parts and for other things, they just dealt w/ the dealers.
So State Farm is good for things like that, just make sure you have full coverage. Thats what I have

When they give you an estimate of what your car is worth, ask them to present you with the data they used to make that estimate. It will be a list of cars from some marketing agency. As you look down the list, cross off all the cars that say they have a sunroof, as GSRs are commonly grouped in there. You will be left with maybe one or two actual Type-Rs.
Then produce adds from autotrader and Ebay showing what the going prices for similar cars are. You should easily get 18K. I got $2000 over MSRP for my 1 year old R w/ 27K miles on it when it was totaled.
Think of it like a court case; you need to discredit their evidence, and then provide new evidence about what the value really is.

really amazing how their insurance quote sytem works. it was pretty quick and automated..
you just plug in your info and the system automatically matches your information to companies with services that most closely meet your insurance needs. Those selected insurance companies process your request and contact you via email, fax, or phone with a quote.

Everyone raves about "how much" they got back when settling and overlooking the fact that is just comes back to all of us in the form of higher insurance premiums.
It sucks that it can't be a win, win situation. Insurance companies always make out nice...

I sorta understand that, but when you look at my rates, and the amount of cars I have and how much I paid each year and how much I paid for almost 3 years after the claim, it still doesn't add up to the total value of the R. Maybe in like 5 more years. I only pay around $1,600. a year for 4 cars now and 2 are fully covered. Guess it's not so bad to be old and married
I have a bunch of friends on the job and all of them agree that State Farm and Allstate are 2 of the best companies out there when handling claims and damages issues.
