Default Soft top removal ?

I did a search on soft top and only came up with one result, and it was not what I was looking for so, I'm gonna ask anyway.

If one removes the motor for the soft top, will it still actuate by hand? I want a top that goes up and down, since I don't want to always have the hard top on, and I don't want to park with no top either.

Could this be done?

Good question. You can remove the motors without taking off the top. Whether or not you can actuate a 90lb top by hand I don't know. Why would you want to take off the soft top if both hardtops on the market works with it still in place? If it was a weight issue I'd understand; in that case I would take the whole top off, not just the motors.

Its for the weight, I want to drop some weight, but only put the hardtop on at the track. Sure the top is heavy, but its not like all of that would be under operation by hand, some of the weight is still on the car.

I wanna track this bad boy until about a year or two down the road when the AP1's get a bit cheaper.

The soft top isn't all that simple to take off. It involves raping all the interior plastic pieces, so those might as well come out too. While you're at it, throw out the carpeting(~30lbs), spare(?), tool kit(a couple), passenger seat(a lot), door panels(10 lbs, but far from the centerline).

If you add that all up, including the 80-90 lb soft top, then factor in the weight of the hardtop, I'm guessing at least a 150lb diet. I'd leave the softtop as the last resort, its a PITA to take off and put back in.

You can also try a drycell battery. That will save maybe 20lbs up front, to help offset the diet in the rear to keep things balanced.

Isn't the car a bit rear-heavy anyways? Something like 49/51?

I was under the impression it was 50/50. I may be wrong, though.

Honda listed the AP2 at 49/51. Because of that I concentrated on lightening the rear. Spare, toolkit, carpeting, exhaust probably put it closer to 50/50, or even more front biased.

youll save about 5 pounds taking the top motor out. its only a beefed up power window motor. there are MUCH easier and better ways of shedding that. if that 5 pounds matters that much youd already be riding in a stripped car.

I heard its 15 lbs for the motor alone . You can go on a diet, wear light clothes, thinner socks/shoes, no underwear etc.

Get some light weight seats like Mugen S1s , spoon sport seats.

A gallon of gasoline is about 6.5lbs. So keep that in mind. Running 1/8 - 1/4 tank could save 50+lbs.

Yes, but in order to do that, you have to rape the interior plastic that goes from behind the seat to the roll hoops. Not that you'd care, but its pretty frustrating if you're doing it the first time.

while your at it buy a NSX-R shift boot. Saves about 1 oz. j/k. I wouldnt see why you couldnt do it. Take it out and then wind that **** by hand. I mean worse case scenerio if your motor went bad it moves by hand...i think...**** it better.

Well in the owners manual it does say if it becomes stuck you can move it by hand.

i removed the softtop and motor out and added the mugen FRP HT...u save about 40 lbs from everything...the softtop and motor weigh in about 70+ lbs, the motor should be around 10 lbs and the FRP HT is about 40 lbs...when i weighed my car i saved 40 lbs all together...i removed all plastics and panels inside also...so i guessing all the plastics and center glove piece saved me another 10 lbs...so far my ride weighs in at 1170 kg-2570 lbs with a full tank of gas and without driver...if your asking how did i get it that light? well i also removed spare tire and tools, titanium single outlet exhaust, lighter car battery, race bucket seats, lighter aftermarket parts(brakes, engine bolt ons, drivetrain etc), CF hood and trunk, lighter forged wheels, removed driver and passenger airbags, gutted trunk and removed A/C compressor and lines...now i am in the process of removing all the sound detoning out of the rear...i've only done one part in the trunk and its hella work...anyways hope this helps u guys if u wanting to do weight reduction on your S

Did most of the stripping except the softtop removal, since I dont have a hardtop. Car does feel a bit lighter on its feet.
