Default Intakes

Well, as some of you may know, I've been considering getting an intake for some time. I just want to get some of your personal opinions. Here's a few questions:

1. Which would you prefer, CAI or Short Ram and why?

2. Does brand name really matter? If so, which brand do you suggest?

3. Which brand has the best proven performance and quality?

4. Where would you suggest I get it from?

Thanks

Ebay pipe and K&N filter. I'm telling you.. a pipe is a pipe, so why pay 150+ for name brand? I got mine for $40 shipped, check my sig for the install.. and I can defintaley feel the change in power. I suggest getting a cold air intake if you live in a state where the rain water never stands more than an inch or two... if it does, get a bypass valve or just a short ram... Mine is a CAI, I live in NY and never had a single problem... Love the sound too, doesn't sound ricey, sounds amazing! G'Luck.

PS - The guy I got my intake from was option-something. Check the feedback.

you can just get any ebay seller's intake, OR there is actually a ebay seller that sells regular ebay intake with K&N filter for $80 shipped i think..

Would an Ebay and an AEM be really any different in smog and exhaust emissions?

j racing > aem v2 cai > injen cai > aem cai

all these were on a h series motor. i just remember the j's racing replica making a little more whp then the aem v2 cai.

but get a CAI from ebay (the 2 piece pipe) then a k&n filter, then when it rains switch to short ram. save some money.

like that other guy said "a pipe is a pipe" and dont pay for name brand pipe and a stick .

On the B18c5, the Aem provided the best gains throughout the entire band. The Js was said to have better throttle response, but obviously the dyno can't show that.

EDIT: I don't even think that Js makes a whale ***** for a bb4 or bb6, do they???

I just paid less than $80 for a replica J's racing intake. You have to do some fiddling around to make it fit, 97Preludeguy is right, they never made one for a prelude but there are a Prelude's with them.

In order to make teh J's fit you have to either A) put you battery in your trunk or B) figure out some way to turn it 90 degrees. You also have to mess with your main harness, aka take it off all of the damn brackets and kinda push it outa the way. Ill show you a pic of my friends car (Mgags7). He has one and it wasnt too much of a PITA to make it fit.

Warning, this picture if f'in big....

Edit: That intake came outa of an EG w/an H22 and mine came out of an ITR I talked to Kteller and he said that the DC/EK/EG intakes are all made from the same mold. You can usually find a few of them floating around in the marketplace if you do a search for "intakes", thats how I found mine.

Now, can you convert just about any CAI to by simply taking off the last half and sticking on the filter? As an example, can this be converted into an SRI by simply using the first pipe only? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1

slight gain, very slight, colder air always gives a little more power.

and for those of you with lots of rain, check out the AEM air by-pass valve, that thing is amazing.

I got an Ebay intake, best $20 I've ever spent on my car... This one to be precise: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

However, I've also added an Apexi filter and an AEM bypass valve that I've managed to scavenge off friends.

Sure you may argue, you get what you pay for... and AEM and all the others are of higher quality... but what get, is NOT proportional to what you pay... $20 vs $250 !!

1. I would say CAI because it gives you better bang for ur buck. The short ram as far as what i have read and heard is not really that good. The short ram brings in more hot air from the engine bay then the CAI. The CAI brings in Cold air from the front of the car. that doesn't matter much tho. With the water it is really hard and rare for that to be a problem i haven't heard anyone having a problem with that and even if u think it will be most the time u can buy a sheeled for it.
2. I dont think brand matters. I would just buy one of ebay and trow a AEM or a K&N filter on it pritty much the same thing. But i have heared in like california if u dont have a card or something saying its a legal product they can ticket you for it and most the time the brand names come with those card...but thats jsut what i have heard.
3.=2.
4. Anywhere. Any car shop Ebay. i would say autozone tho there stuff is crappy. I have one from ebay with a AEM filter works just as good as my freinds AEM one on his civic SI.

in california, you need the CARB# or you are illegal and get pulled over my cops if you have ebay intake. but i dont think they would just stop you so taht they can check your intake. also you CANT pass the smog check with ebay intake, but i believe you can just borrow a legal intake , or put in a stock intake just for the smog check and put back your EBAY intake in after you pass the smog check.
installing intake takes less than 1 hour so i would buy ebay cuz its worth the money!

i bought the same cold air intake and it was excellent for its price. the only problem i had was i had to cut the second pipe that connects to the filter almost in half so it would fit. did u have the same problem? 97 prelude

Just buy a carb legal intake, trust me i had to do that, it only cost me like $120 or something like that, I didn't want to but i had to cause well i got a fix a ticket You could pass smog with an ebay intake, but it depends on the person who does your smog whether he is cool or a dick. I didn't really feel much of a difference though. A little bit cause i went to 3" to 2 1/2" or something like that. By the way i bought the aem intake short ram, i just wanted something street legal.

What are the normal sizes of the pipe? I see 3" OD is that as good as a stock motor would need, or too much? Any materials other then Al besides the J's Racing? I've been looking on Ebay and most places don't say the ID or even the OD. I've yet to see anything other then Al.
thanks

I'd say the bigger the better, since in an engine what restricts your power is the amount of air you can get into it. So the more air flows in, the more bang your engine can make.

Intakes are very simple things, so aluminum works well because it's cheap (despite the high price you may pay for your intake), it's easy to work with, and it's very light-weight. Basically, the only improvement you can make, is insulating it, so the heat from the engine, doesn't warm up your incoming air.
