Default TO SHIM OR NOT TO SHIM??????

90 Civic DX,1.5L DPIM.
Doing head job, thought about using a shim with .020" thickness(thinner than factory replacement). But in my ignorant little world I need to know a couple things.
-Do you have to pull of the harmonic balacner(crank pulley) to take off the timming cover to reset the tensioner?
-If I shim it instead of shaving it with the given thickness of the shim, will my vavles get mashed up??
-will my timming be so severly off that it will flat out be worthless to atemp this???

MY CAR IS IN PIECES!!!PLEASE GIVE USEFUL FEED BACK!!!!

there is a 14mm bolt that holds the tensioner and there is a nice little hole in the cover so no you do not need to take that off.

As far as the shim thing, I have no clue wtf your talking about.
