Default Steering column

Squeaking when I turn the wheel...I've owned 3 EG hatches and they've all done it...usually more so when it's cold out...

What is this and what's the fix?

well thanks for the bump...I'm just wanting to know how I can cure the problem

I figure it's maybe the boot down on the column or something, but whenever it actually does it, I don't have time to go searching for the noise.

Not really an answer to your question, but it doesn't sound like anything a can of WD-40 couldn't fix.

You would think that if you have had 3 of them do it, you would not be so lazy and find out for yourself.

Thanks for calling me lazy, but I thought that perhaps if someone else has gone through this and diagnosed the problem, then perhaps I won't have to take time out of my day managing a store to tear into it myself. Isn't that what this forum was created for, or am I mistaken? I was under the impression that H-T was here for people to help other people and share things about their cars...maybe I just assumed too much...

NOW, does anyone with the intelligence higher than a sack of potatoes have an answer for me, or does nobody know what actually causes this?

bump this up.

my steering column clicks when i turn the wheel back and forth...could be related to boot joints.

handa,
The clockspring for your airbag is loose...that's what the clickingis all about. Unless you know very well what you're doing, you should take it to a professional to get it fixed.

Try putting a little grease on the knuckle, half way or so down the column.

eh, that sounds like a plan, but I think that it's related to something a little higher up in the column...

If it's higher up, it's the contact for the horn. I know this cause my horn quit working when I thought I "fixed" it.

If you try oiling it, your horn will probably not sound as loud. Just grin and bear it.

That's a new one...perhaps I should use some lithium grease...that should be what's in there from the factory....good call

You just have to remove the upper and lower covers to see it (very simple fix).
