It's pretty smooth for me. Sometimes 1st and reverse are hard to get into thats all. If it grinds...YOU WILL KNOW. It's like scratching up your car kind of sound.

I sometimes wonder about my ITR shifter also. It is no where near as smooth as the used one I drove at the dealership prior to purchasing the R i have. The gears sometimes grind when i engage into fifth from third. I also drove my cousin's GSR and it is as smooth as the BMW shifters.

Is it normal you ask... well, it's normal if you don't maintain your car properly... also, it depends on your driving technique... do you downshift or powershift.. if you do, that's really bad for the tranny... also, how many miles do you have on the car...?? if you haven't done a tranny fluid change.. do so.. and try using Red Line Oil.... my GS-R has minor trouble getting into 1st... I have to put it in 2nd and then back to 1st.... and grinding.. you'll know when you're tranny starts to grind... it's just mad crunching... and if it continues even during low RPMs... sooner or later, it's not going to go in gear at all... my tranny grinds, but only at high RPMs going into 3rd, but if I'm just driving normally.... it's cool... but definately do a tranny flush and put in new gear oil....

Easy way to not grind when putting the car in reverse put the car in 4th then reverse this stops the main shaft from spinning and it helps the gear life

I think u meant 3rd to 5th...

I sometimes rev the car hard for the first three gears then shift to fifth gear to not exceed, excessively, the speed limit.

Grinding is normal if you shift from 3rd to 5th fairly fast. I'm guilty of this sometimes too.

Be nice to your tranny, don't skip gears while upshifting and rev match when down shifting.

I think the problem arises cause 3rd and 5th share the same synchro but I have no idea since I have never worked on a tranny before (someone explain, please).

The only time it isn't smooth is when I've just woken up and I'm tired.

Sometimes mine is a little tough getting into 3rd on the hywy but other then that its stock feeling, 2nd before 1st and 1st before reverse...

Will be do a tranny fluid change soon (I have now 24000 will change fluid before 30000)

Shifting problems? Hmm
Everytime i redline in first, it's very hard to get it into 2nd.

As for my daily beater (a cheap old ford laser), half the time i put it in reverse it grinds (with the clutch pedal ALL the way down)

Whats worse is that today the car stalled TWICE... when it was in NEUTRAL.

Don't be lazy, shift 3-4-5 to help the trany out.

when i go from 3rd to 5th, i double clutch (but I don't blip the throttlE) and that seems to help. It slips into gear really easy. Same thing going backwards, except I blip.

When I have problems with 1st or Reverse, I put it into 4th or 3rd to stop the layshaft and then it easily goes.

I kind of get the same problem, No grinding, it's just not smooth. When I shift into gear it does not go straight in it kind of stops right before then I push harder and it goes in, u know what I mean? Is this normal, I changed my tranny fluid about 5000 miles ago..

Smooth and silky as new with 17k miles. Don't think I have ever heard a grinding sound, despite lots of spirited driving.

I've only got 27000 on my car but they're all pretty hard miles. My car shifts fine.

Some cars are different. If it doesn't grind when you don't skip gears, it is normal. It usualy won't go into 1st when downshifting, but that's also normal.
Don't worry, a little notchiness is not a problem.
Also you can learn rev-matching and doble-clutching. It helps your tranny and it's fun to do as well!

Mine is best desribed as 'mecahnical'. Its only smooth when you rev it and at low speed can be a bit agricultural. Reverse always sucks.

you know whats better (imo) gm synchroshift, made my tranny feel real nice.

btw my theory (this may not apply to you if you have a stock clutch?)

is the master cylinder gets worn prematurely w/ these heavy duty clutches (i went thru 2 master cylinders w/ a ACT Xtreme pp) i feel its not meant or can take the sustained presure for long, i have a clutchnet stage 2 now w/ a new master cylinder and everything is peachy,

thanks,

Chuck

shouldn't skip gear when up-shifting
synchrone is not design to do that
and I personally see no reason for doing that as well
