Default radiator cap???

My radiator cap has a chunk missing in the gasket and i was wondering if this would be a cause for it to over heat. it heats up to about 3/4 up the temp. gauge then it will fall to just under half way on the gauge. I replaced the thermostat just recently also. It also seems to really heat up at idle.
please help me!!

as long as your temp gauge doesnt go the H you should be ok but if you say its getting pretty hot at idle check your fans see if there turning on went there suppose
to or maybe run your an direct always on
